Proposed widening of Dow Road

READ MORE: Proposed widening of Dow Road
The idea is to also extend the road from Carolina Beach to neighboring Kure Beach. When it comes to the idea of widening and extending Dow road between Carolina Beach and Kure Beach, there are plenty of opinions on both sides of the road. Carolina Beach resident Robert Bamberger said, "I bike this quite a bit, and it's 55 miles per hour, and it can get a little scary if people don't move over. I think it would be a great idea to add a short bike lane to either side of this." Kure Beach resident Ken Withrow said, "I think widening it extensively to four lanes would maybe create some problems. I think the better thing would be to make it a wider two lane and a separate bike trail." The Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization or MPO proposed to widen Dow Road from two, to four lanes, to increase road safety for residents and use the road as a hurricane evacuation route. The plan, first proposed in 2005, would widen Dow Road from US 421 in Carolina Beach to K Avenue in Kure Beach, as well as extend the road from K Avenue to Fort Fisher Boulevard. But, the legislature voted it down when funding for the project would have increased the sales tax for residents a half cent. This time around, officials say they would either find an alternative local funding source or receive state DOT money for the project. Anne Brodsky owns a hotel in Kure Beach that does not sit on Dow Road, but she says what happens to the road could potentially effect her business. "I do not think it's a good idea at all. I think it would really hurt the downtown central business district in Kure Beach tremendously," said Brodsky. Brodsky says much of the traffic would be diverted from area roads, which could hurt many businesses. The Kure Beach Town Council agrees with Brodsky, voting against the plan to extend the road into Kure Beach, believing it will also harm their local businesses. A public meeting to discuss plans for Dow Road began at 4 p.m. It's going on now at Carolina Beach Elementary School, and will last until 7 p.m. This will be the first of two public meetings on this issue.

Dow Road

Let them widen it now at least it would be ready for future development. Someday rules will change for that area regarding development so better to widen it now before it starts because just like Military Cutoff Rd-it would be a nightmare to travel after development begins. Just think Macon & Company would make great deals of money from this type of development. I have difficulties believing the current administration wants to protect the environment just check out the business/voting history.

Please...

Don't hesitate... widen and extend the road immediately.
