Books were a hot item at the Independence Mall Saturday, as Read Across America came to Wilmington. Read Across America is the largest reading event in the country. Saturday, Wilmington Mayor Bill Saffo and County Commissioner Jason Thompson read Dr. Seuss to kids. The children were happy to hear Dr. Seuss books out loud, because for many of them, his books are their favorite. “I have the whole book set and I read the whole book set in one day,” said Lexi Freas of Wilmington. Representatives from the New Hanover County Library were also there to hand out information and applications for library cards. The nationwide reading celebration takes place each year on, or near, March 2nd, the birthday of Dr. Seuss.
