Recycling center changes increase efficiency

PENDER COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Changes at Pender County recycling centers have caused concern for some of our viewers. At the recycling centers in Hampstead, Rocky Point and Burgaw, there is now only one recycling dumpster, where there used to be four.

Waste Industries says the recycling dumpsters were filling up so quickly, they were having to haul 50 to 60 loads a month. Now compactors have been installed, so the recycled goods can be compressed and hauled to the recycling facility in fewer loads, cutting down on fuel and labor costs.

Crushing all these materials (especially glass) together? How are they separated? Are we REALLY recycling? If its just going to the dump let me know so I can stop separating. I want to recycle but be open about what is going on, if its cost prohibitive right now and we will be returning to it on a later date fine. Smashing glass into cardboard and paper to separate later is just hard to believe. Hampstead
