A woman at the heart of the local American Red Cross has died. Alice Snead passed away Thursday at the age of 87. Snead's service to the Red Cross started in 1942, when she was a member of the Nurse's Aid Corps in Richmond, Virginia. She moved to Wilmington in the 1950's. Since then, she has served as both a Cape Fear chapter employee and volunteer. Alice's history with the Red Cross was featured in the recent Cape Fear Museum exhibit, recounting the Cape Fear chapter's 100 years of service.

She was a sweet lady.

She was a sweet lady.

Alice Snead

Alice was my family's neighbor for nearly 50 years and will be greatly missed in her neighborhood. Not only was she devoted to the American Red Cross and helping others in the community, she loved her family and was always interested in the goings on in the lives of all that surrounded her. She was part of the neighborhood village looking out for the well being of all the children, elderly and pets. Alice loved her personal pets and along with her Red Cross work was once a local dog groomer, as well.
