Surfers in Wrightsville Beach still have unlimited water access for at least this summer.
The Board of Alderman decided to keep its existing ordinance, which allows surfers to surf wherever they want in red flag, or dangerous, conditions.
Earlier this year, the town's mayor and board considered limiting water access for surfers in these conditions, fearing it was dangerous for swimmers.
Tony Butler of Sweetwater Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach supports the resolution, and said people should not be swimming in those conditions to begin with.
Butler said, "When there is a red flag condition you don't want to encourage any swimming at all, and that was our stance, and I think it was good that the water safety committee also realized that and brought that to the attention of the Board of Alderman."
The board plans to revisit the issue again in October.
