WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Rep. Mike McIntyre worked very closely with Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, both being Blue Dog Democrats and serving together on the Armed Services Committee.
McIntyre spoke to WWAY Sunday about the shooting, calling it a senseless tragedy and a tragedy for all Americans. He said, thankfully but unfortunately, the incident seems to be an isolated one and not a national conspiracy.
"Giffords is truly an exceptional public servant, and she was doing what she loved during this tragic situation," McIntyre said. "We all should be able to go, as the nine-year-old girl was doing, to learn more about our government. We all should be able to stop by to say hello to our Federal Representative, just as our Federal Judge was doing. We all should be able to go and inquire or share our concerns or ideas about our American government, as those other constituents were doing. It's always that tension between accessibility and openness in government on the one hand, and then everyone's security on the other hand.
"It'll be a tender balance but an important balance so that we continue to have open government, yet we also provide for the people's security. Democracy works best when you can have civil discourse. It may not mean that folks agree, but our government is set up for differences to be resolved peaceably and intelligently and with openness. That's part of how Democracy works, but it needs to be done in a sensible, safe and secure manner, and this clearly was absolutely senseless."
