RALEIGH, N.C. -- A consultant has found that North Carolina spends less on its health coverage for state workers than three neighboring states.
The News & Observer of Raleigh reported the analysis presented to a task force examining the health plan for the General Assembly concluded that North Carolina had lower claims costs per member per month than Georgia, Tennessee and Virginia.
The study by Aon Consulting comes after lawmakers last year raised premiums and reduced benefits as part of a $675 million bailout of the state employee health insurance plan. It covers more than 600,000 state employees, retirees and teachers.
State Rep. Hugh Holliman of Davidson County says even though the plan compares well, costs keep rising at nearly double-digit rates.
