Report says NC debt capacity has grown

READ MORE:
RALEIGH (AP) -- State government has more room to borrow money than it did last year because tax revenues keep growing and debt is getting paid off. A state report released Thursday determined that North Carolina could issue about $480 million in additional debt annually over the next decade and remain financially sound. Last year, the Debt Affordability Study concluded the state could take on an average $384 million annually. State Treasurer Richard Moore chaired the panel that conducted the study. He said state lawmakers must stop creating new debt that doesn't require voters to approve the borrowing before it can occur. The panel's report also said the state could borrow an additional $176 million each year from two pots of dedicated transportation money. This is the first year the study examined transportation debt. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

My credit card says I have a

My credit card says I have a $40,000 credit limit. I am not idiotic enough to put anywhere near that amount on it to go into stupid debt. Why must the state government think it would be fine to do something stupid like going into more debt just because some banks say to do it????

No one is saying that...

The report simply states NC is in a better position to borrow if required. First, it's prudent to know how much they can borrow so that amount isn't exceeded. Second, it's an indication of financial health. The more you can borrow (not will borrow), the better off you are. Third, borrowing isn't always a bad thing as long as its done pudently and for the right reasons. Example: Do you own a house? Can your child pay cash for their college education? The same applies to government.
