Representatives from various transportation industries around the country are gathered in Wilmington. They make up the National Multi-Modal Transportation Steering Committee. Among the industries represented are ports, rail systems, airports, and transit systems. Thursday and Friday, the committee members will work to come up with recommendations they will make to Congress in March. They will make funding recommendations as well as offer a needs assessment about the nation's transportation systems. Wilmington City Council member, Laura Padgett is one of the committee's vice-chairs and said they hope to come up with a comprehensive plan based on the country's needs. "We have a number of different modes of transportation in this country. They need to be connected, hence the title multi-modal. We need to seamlessly be able to go from a subway or a bus to a train to a taxi to a highway." Committee members also said transportation infrastructure is an important way to create jobs. The current federal funding bill for transportation expires in September, so Congress will consider the committee's recommendations for the new funding bill.
