Ron Hewett pleads guilty

Former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett appeared in Superior Court this morning in Bolivia to face state charges. Hewett pleaded guilty to three counts of embezzlement and pleaded no contest to one count of obstructing justice. He received a four month sentence, to be served concurrently with the sixteen month federal sentence he is already serving. Hewett's supporters were pleased he did not receive any additional time behind bars. Hewett’s cousin, Michael Clemmons said, "The judge was very fair today. I think all of his friends and family who came out today,Ii'm going to see him in a little while at his house, we are all very happy with the judicial system today." Following his release from prison, Hewett will be under supervised probation for 3 years.

Gore did his job!

It amuses me that people are attacking Gore for doing his job. The job of the DA's office is to prosecute. Do you see members of the DA's office stopping speeders issuing them tickets? No! When Gore was presented with the evidence by the Deputies of Brunswick Co. he immediately had Hewett removed from office, prosecuted Hewett, and Hewett pled guitly. Federal charges usually take priority over State charges and this is the case here. As for Hewett's sentence, I'm sure the sentence was within the Fair Sentencing guidelines of the state of North Carolina. As for Jon David, do you really think he's concerned about the interests of the people in Bladen, Brunswick, or Columbus, or just interested in his own.

Rex Gore

How do you come to the conculsion that Gore did his job? He did nothing. Hewett pleaded guilty and got nothing. Please do not treat us like we are stupid enough to believe that Gore has now or ever done his job. He is a disgrace to the legal community and should be removed from office and given a cell next to Hewett.

Anyone can see through what happened. There is nothing 'fair' here, even if it is lawful. As for Jon David, I'm sure he is more interested in the interests of the people in Bladen, Brunswick, or Columbus than Rex Gore is - Gore has just proved that. He didn't do ANYTHING until the feds started snooping around.

You really do think Rex Gore did a good job??? He is tight as thieves with Ronnie and that's why he got such a light sentence with no extra jail time. The following is a quote from an article in the Fayetteville Observer for the sentence Sheriff Maynor got in the Robeson County Tarnished Shield investigation for similar things that Ronnie did: "Maynor, who served as sheriff from 1994 through 2004, began a six-year term in August after pleading guilty to hiring on-duty deputies for personal work and to lying to federal investigators when he denied knowing about a satellite TV card scam." This is the same type of embezzlement that Ron Hewett did, but he "skated" on the state charges!!! Just another example of the "good ole boy system" still at work in Brunswick, Columbus and Bladen County where Rex Gore presides as DA. He basically "gave him a walk" on the state charges by giving it the probabtion that he did. If you or I had done the same thing we would be under the jailhouse!! You know it is true.

You were my class mate dood. allways on the streight and narrow. well i guess all that power just went to your head. please get your head on streight wile your on vaction. think of your wife and kids. as well as all the loved ones that you let down. but things can get better for you Ron. any way good luck to you and your peeps. I voted for Jon to replace Rex Gore last time and he came close to beating him. If he had campaigned just a little more vocally in all the counties he could have beaten him. Rex Gore and his "good ole boy system" needs to go. He has been "light" on death penalty cases during his career and in Columbus County all the defense attorneys get just what they want for their clients on drug and other charges. DWI's are a joke in Columbus County courtrooms!! I see signs that COLCOR is at it's best and still rampant!! Nothing will change until we get a new DA....it is time for Gore to go and this latest example of a "walk" he gave to Ron Hewitt is the last straw. Jon David I will work tirelessly for you when you get ready to run!!!

I don't know why anyone is surprised at this. The ONLY way Ron would do any time is through the federal courts. Why be so shocked. We voted for the good ol boy network. (at last the majority of you did) The only way to change anything is to vote the good ol boy network out. Remember all of this in their next election.

UH did I miss something

So he was able to walk into a courtroom with his family after being sentenced last week to federal prison? Am I missing something? I thought that when you are given an active sentence that you are taken away right then and there to jail/prison. What in the world made this criminal so different from any other person who has ever been sentenced? Where is their weekend stay at home? Where is their choice in when and where they are able to turn themselves over to the system? This does not seem right nor fair. Not only that but his sentence DID NOT fit the crime. They were too lenient on this man. For someone who was supposed to protect us and serve the community, he got off easy as they say. What about all the victims? Where is their justice? I have known for a while that the NC court system is completely screwed up. I guess the only way you get off easy here is if you have money or were a person of authority. Too bad Thomas Wright didn't get off so easliy

I will never forget the day I heard someone tell Sheriff Hewett that what he was doing was against the law, he replied"Iam the LAW". Iam sorry Mr. Hewett it does not look that way now does it? Maybe Mr. Hewett is a good man,but the problem was in his mind that he was the law.I will never forget the day one of my kids came home from school and had said that she had ate lunch with the Sheriff,she was so happy to have had such a chance to be sitting with this "great man".Tonight we had to finally tell her and our other two kids that the law is not always as it seems and that was very hard for us to do.One last thing that I have to say to Mr.Hewett, is that God forgives and we forgive you to.Just remember it is not a lesson unless you have learned something,to the family of Mr.Hewett our family will keep your family in our prayers.

what crime was committed by Rex Gore? Ronald pleaded guilty to all the charges against him because he did it, so why is this a Rex Gore crime? I think the only thing unjustice done in that court was givin him 4 months...he should be put away for a LONG time. I know people that skipped probation and went away for a couple years.

Guest 555, Who do you think made the deal with Hewett? Rex Gore that is who. It was a criminal offense to use his leverage with those charges to get Ronald a deal to cover his own misdoings. Do you seriously think that you could have gotten that deal for those crimes? I don't think so.

As the deal Rex gave Ron runs concurrently with his Fed time and the Fed time is longer, Rex Gore did not give one day of time to Ron. It was a very sweat deal from Gore to Hewett. The time on the state charges, is on paper only. Or better put, NO TIME AT ALL!

I am convinced, I have to believe that if anyone else pleaded guilty to these charges, they would be getting a lot more than this, I did believe in Ronald but what an eye opener, I have egg on my face, thoroughly ashamed of this system. I have been fooled by the very people I trusted to uphold the law from the DA To the ex sheriff I cannot apologize enough, but I will make every effort to be better informed in the future and to vote Appropriately, They could at least have tried to fool me again... On this I agree with you 100% if it were anyone else or, you or, myself this "deal" would not have been offered. I do also agree with contingency that you have not egg on your face at all! Ronald Hewett won two elections and it was not just your vote. The man was one hell of a politician and had the great gift of gab. A great deal of people honored and believed in him. He has egg on his face for what he did. There is none on the loyal voters that believed in him. He was not that first or the last to take advantage of his position. Sadly, we always find out after the fact. But that is normal. If we knew before the fact we would not elect them. No reason for you to be looking at the ground, there is nothing there for you. Keep your head up. Personally, the only ones I have to question are those with their "eyes wid shut". There seems to be quite a following that would ignore his criminal intent and doings. And you know, it is not all about putting him in jail. Part of it is to put the message out there to others that would do the same. "Do the crime and you will do the time". Could you even imagine what it would be like if the courts turned the back on this kind of thing and did nothing at all? If that was the message sent out by the courts our law enforcement agencies would be totally and unforgiving corrupt!

If the people want to fix it all they have to do is start to picket the court house...BIG SIGNS, REX GORE MUST GO!!! Rex Gore's Deal of the Century

Rex Gore orchestrated the "deal of the century" for his good buddy Ronald Hewett!! The only reason Ron was even charged, because Rex really did not want to, was because of all the media attention from the federal investigation!!! People who vote in Brunswick, Columbus, and Bladen county....please wake up and remember this come the next election...PLEASE. COLCOR, to those who still remember this from many years ago, was over the deals and illegal stuff going on with judges, lawyers, and law enforcement officers. Deals were being made that basically put criminals on the street with a slap on the wrist because money and promises were rampant in the discharge of cases. Rex Gore needs to go, right along with any of the others who do things wrong. None of the private citizens out there without money or strong ties to politics could have gotten such a "no sentence" as Ron Hewitt did!!! You best believe that.....

Deals and judges

Unfortunately, Gore is still the DA, not the judge. This was a plea deal. Gore did have a hand in fashioning that. If I'm not mistaken, when the charges were being drawn up in the beginning, Roy Trest helped Gore write them. Then he turns around and represents Hewett in court? I sincerely hope you are not trying to say there is nothing smelly about the decision today. Anyone with a pea-sized brain can see the truth. To all of the BCSD personnel who got shafted today, please accept my apologies. I know all of you are not guilty of anything except trying to right a situation. I know some few of those who turned Hewett in are his cronies and have problems of their own, they have been alluded to only too well, but I also know that there were among the number bringing charges against the sheriff, professionals who did what they thought was the only steps open to them. Many citizens of this county suffer along with you tonight. To you, I offer prayers, also for your families. I am truly sorry your quest for justice has ended in such a terrible black eye - it is not a reflection on you, but on this county and its consistent back-turning on the way the law should work.
