Rucho gets nod as NC Senate redistricting chairman

RALEIGH, NC (AP) -- A Mecklenburg County senator is the choice of Republicans to lead the North Carolina Senate's efforts to draw new legislative and congressional districts in 2011.

Expected Senate leader Phil Berger said Monday that Sen. Bob Rucho will be the chairman of the Senate Redistricting Committee. His appointment is contingent on Berger's election as Senate president pro tempore next month.

Rucho is a dentist who won his sixth term last month. Rucho said lawmakers will work to draw fair and legal district lines that ensure the right of citizens to choose their lawmakers.

Redistricting is important because the lines will remain in place through the 2020 elections. Boundaries could help the new GOP majority keep the upper hand in the General Assembly for the next decade.
