Runners Pound Pavement for Teens With Disabilities

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- If you were up bright and early Saturday morning, you may just have seen Elvis Presley running around Mayfaire Town Center.

The second annual Flashback Run encouraged runners to dress up in their best 70s apparel, and they didn't disappoint. The race raises money for the Flashback Arts and Athletic Program, which provides safe and fun summer activities for developmentally challenged teens and young adults.

“This was started last year by some teachers and parents that recognized there's nothing for (these) middle school and high school kids to do during the summer months when school's out of session,” said Jim Bader, a volunteer with the Flashback Program. “So what the program does is it gives them some arts and some athletics at no cost to the parents.”

This year's race saw over three hundred runners pounding the pavement. WWAY's Megan Torjussen and Nadine Maeser were proud runners in the race - although they did not finish in first.
