Salon donating hair to oil clean-up

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A local hair salon is donating its hair clippings to help the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Strandz Salon in Ogden has started sweeping its hair into bags to send to the Gulf Coast.

The salon has signed up with the San Francisco-based charity Matter of Trust, which is collecting human hair and panty hose to send to the oil spill. Believe it or not, hair stuffed into stockings is the perfect way to absorb oil. Lisa Slocum said she had no idea until she signed her salon up.

"We kind of researched it, and found out that we could do it, and we'd like all the other salons to collect their hair clippings too," Slocum said.

Strandz says it can use donations of panty hose and, of course, hair. It's hoping other salons in the area join the cause.

More that hair salons are collecting hair for the oil spill. My pet groomer, Bubbles and Bows of Ocean Isle Beach is sending dog hair to the same effort.

I guess we can spare the hair in our area, and I know that San Francisco has more than enough panty hose to do the job.

It was reported on local TV that a NC manufacturer of hose are donating a truck load for the cause.
