BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Firefighters have had a long night in Brunswick County trying to reign in a fire at an auto salvage yard. It happened at Cadillac Heaven Auto Salvage Yard on Maco Road in Winnabow. It's believed that as many as 100 junk cars were burning at one point Monday night. Thick smoke was visible for miles around. Firefighters believe someone working on an old car with a blow torch sparked the flames. The junkyard is surrounded by woods that are very dry right now. Brunswick County Fire Marshall Scott Garner said, "The gas tanks have already been taken out of the cars, so that's one plus for us. But you know, the amount of fire and the close proximity to the woods is a concern, so we did get forestry to come by, just to stand by, before it gets bad." The fire burned out of control for at least two hours after the call came in to dispatchers around five p.m. Highway 17 was shut down at one point. The road was reopened, and the fire is now contained.
