WILMINGTON -- It's that time of year again for the Salvation Army. Today was the organization's annual toy drive. The regional chapter's commanding officer butch mallard says it's been going on for as long as he can remember. The Salvation Army teamed up with Toys for Tots to begin collecting toys, money and gifts for the less fortunate in November. Today their warehouse on Market Street in Wilmington had more than 30,000 toys on display. Wilmington Salvation Army Commanding Officer Major Butch Mallard said, "Without our help, and the help of people within our community, a lot of people wouldn't get Christmas. And a lot of their friends and everything wake up with new stuff and we want to be an outlet for and help them as well." The toy drive provided Christmas gifts for more than 1,100 families in the area. Thousands of children were able to take home six different gifts a piece.
