WILSON, N.C. -- State officials have sent letters to residents of Saratoga to boil their water as a precaution against possible contamination.

The Wilson Daily Times reported Friday that residents received letters Thursday from the state Division of Environmental Health and Mayor Tommy Hawkins.

The letter said total coliform bacteria were found in recent water samples. The letter said the bacteria were naturally present and not harmful but could indicate more harmful bacteria in the water.

Hawkins said the bacteria were found in a hydrant on a dead end street. He said the chlorine level was increased to kill any harmful bacteria and the water tested OK on Thursday.

Hawkins said residents of the small eastern North Carolina town should check with town officials about when they no longer need to boil their water.
