BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The majority of kids in our area got a few days off from school because of the snow and ice. Now they have to make up those missed days from school. In some cases, students may even have to go to school on a Saturday.

Most counties are using a Saturday to make up a day, and even considering a day during Spring Break.

"I feel like it's going to be kind of hard to get some of the students here on a Saturday," said Gina Gouger, a second grade teacher at Southport Elementary School. "I hate to lose a Spring Break day. We all need that day at that point in the year."

Right now all brunswick county schools will make up the first snow day on January 25. Gouger said they are looking at either a Saturday or one day during Spring Break to make up the second snow day.

"A lot of parents work," Gouger said. "You know, that's just a time in their day or their week that they've not expected their children to have to get up and get ready for school."

Some parents, however, said they wouldn't mind their children going into school on a Saturday. Heather Eason has two sons who attend Southport Elementary. She said her kids going to school on the weekend wouldn't really cut into time with the family.

"I think we can have family time at church and those kinds of things on Sunday and make up for that," Eason said. "I think it will be fine."

Eleanor Rankin has a daughter in kindergarten at Southport Elementary. She would much rather just have her child go in on a Saturday, because it would only be half of a normal school day.

"I would prefer for them to go ahead and have to whole week off of Spring Break and them just go for maybe half a day on a Saturday, so they could go ahead and get it over with," Rankin said.

Southport Elementary Principal Randy Horne said that half of a Saturday equals one full day of school.

Make-up Days

Why aren't we using MLK holdiay, for crying out loud, instead of taking away family time? Mondays are typically school days, making it the logical choice.

Weekends are cherished family time for most (hopefully), so that shouldn't be touched. Spring Break is another option that is being considered; however, many family trips are planned for that particular week. An entire week off in the spring, makes it the perfect time to visit a theme park or go camping as a family.

Adding days at the end of the school years does nothing. Classes have pretty much been over for the week prior to the last day anyway. Doing that will just offer a couple of free baby-sitting days...

makeup days on Saturday

Has anyone thought about some kids have parents that are divorced and may live in different counties that may have visitations on weekends with their children..which wins over court ordered visitation with a parent or makeup for a school day that could be done during the week instead of a saturday? How about taking a teaher's workday or make some of the half days a full day instead. I have a stepson that a saturday make up day may affect his visitation with his mom who lives 2 counties away.

SATURDAY SCHOOL MAKE-UP

I WOULD THINK STEPMOM COULD ARRANGE THE NEXT SATURDAY AS THE VISITION DAY IN CASE OF SATURDAY SCHOOL. SURELY THE MOM WOULD KNOW THAT MAKE-UP IS IMPORTANT ALSO. THAT IS IF SHE WANTS HER CHILD TO RECEIVE AN EDUCATION!!!!! USE SOME COMMON SENSE FOR GOODNESS SAKE!~!!!!

SATURDAY SCHOOL MAKE-UP

I WAS A TEACHER IN CABARRUS COUNTY SCHOOLS FOR 17 YEARS. THEY STATED SATURDAY MAKE-UP ABOUT 8 YEARS AGO. PARENTS AND TEACHER LIKE THE IDEA. PARENTS GET A SATURDAY TO DO GROWN-UP THINGS AND THE STUDENTS GET A SHORT DAY A SCHOOL AND DON'T HAVE TO MISS HOLIDAYS. WITH SO MANY FAMILIES FROM OUT OF TOWN, GOING BACK HOME IS PLANNED AROUND THE SCHOOL SCHEDULE AND PARENTS DON'T WANT TO MISS THE CHANCE FOR A LONG WEEK-END TRIP HOME. TRY IT!!!! I KNOW YOU WILL LIKE IT.
