SBI Agent: Sheriff used divining rod in Laurean's backyard

Associated Press Writer

GOLDSBORO, NC (AP) -- A North Carolina investigator says a sheriff used a wire hanger as a divining rod to search for the buried corpse of a pregnant Marine, making it pointless to collect shoeprints near the grave. State Bureau of Investigation Agent Matthew Clifton's testimony came Monday in the first-degree murder trial of 23-year-old Cesar Laurean. He's accused of killing 20-year-old Lance Cpl. Maria Lauterbach, of Vandalia, Ohio. Her body was discovered buried in Laurean's backyard.

Clifton testified Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown walked around with a bent coat hanger, expecting the device would find the body. Clifton said detectives were unable to take samples of shoe prints. Brown declined comment Monday.

Laurean has pleaded not guilty. He faces life in prison if convicted.

Barney yes !!!

If you folllowed the case from the first day, there were plenty of things that the "good ole sheriff" did during the first weeks that was totally unreal. And yes,he was the laughing stock while the case was going on. I used to get calls from friends that lived in other parts of the country saying that they saw him on TV and couldn't believe what he did and what he said to the press.. So, It doesn't surprise me one bit to hear what he did at the crime seen..I bet there is a lot more to come out too.

I am just surprised he is still the sheriff. LOL

Demote him to deputy

Good idea Barney, now give us all your bullets except for one you can keep in your shirt pocket. Way to put NC in the spotlight for hick police work.

you elected this joker...

This probably one of the reasons North Carolina is rated 48 out of 51 School effectiveness IE...the Public School system

We are behind Puerto Rico FOLKS! ... we are behind WEST (by God) VIRGINIA of 1999...we actually were rated 46 ...

Remember ... Sheriff is an elected office...he is simply a reflection of the hicks who put him in office

Not me

No, I live in New Hanover County so I don't get to vote in Onslow County. Try to look at a state map that lists counties before you spout out.
