SC motorcycle rally moving from beach to NC

MYRTLE BEACH -- A motorcycle rally that has become controversial on South Carolina's Grand Strand is moving to North Carolina. The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reported Monday that the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association is moving its May motorcycle rally to New Bern, N.C. The association said New Bern Mayor T.A. Bayliss III has welcomed the rally that can be held at the New Bern Fairgrounds on May 15-16. That's shorter than the rally that has attracted 500,000 people to Myrtle Beach. Myrtle Beach officials have passed ordinances to restrict the rallies. The city acted after a Coastal Carolina University student was shot and killed last year during one of the rallies in a dispute over a parking space. Mark Cox with The Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association says New Bern offers a rally without restrictions. (Copyright 2009 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)

Bike Week

New Bern is not really large enough to hold a large Bike Rally. Someone said to spread it out down toward Morehead City. The coastal area is getting to be a retirement area and most of the people will not want a bunch of motorcycles racing around everywhere. Will there be a curfew so local people will be able to get to sleep at a decent hour? There are alot of things to think about before this happens.

Helmets

From what I hear people are saying that bikers are coming here because Myrtle Beach is trying to inact helmet laws. Well people, North Carolina has a helmet law. If you ride you gotta wear a helmet. I think there will still be a big rally in Myrtle Beach; it's just Harley Davidson will not have a big presence there. Eventually when it gets too big for New Bern people will start complaining. Give everything a try to see if it works. It will be good for the area.

MB BIKE WEEK (no HORRY COUNTY BIKE WEEK)

I have spoke to numerous businesses in Horry County!! May Rally is still going on. They will be nothing in the City, but other business like SBB, HB Spokes, Rat Hole and North Myrtle Beach will continue. When I spoke to them, they stated "Don't go into the City, they don't want your money! That is ok, We just booked a room for 1,000 for the week that is outside the city limits! So, make plans to go and show the county support! We are. RIDE HOGS RIDE!!!!!

First of all in no way will bikers come to new bern for a rally that lasts two days. Take it from me, I am no expert, but I do work for a Harley-Davidson Dealer that is part of the dealer association. The reason they are moving it to new bern is based upon money and greed, not the bikers or the towns ability to hold court. Anyways, MB will not be able to stop bikers from coming. They have some new ordinances not laws that have come into effect. However, the state of South Carolina has in no way passed a helmet law. Therefore, The city of Myrtle Beach can try and institute a helmet law but will be trumped in court everytime. Why you ask? Because city goverment does not overrule state goverment. That also goes for there other silly ordinaces as well. The city passed these ordinances to hastle bikers and get mor DWI arrests. The thing to do will be to go to North MB and The Shallotte are of NC and go to local camp grounds and hotels for a good time. There is still plenty to do in the area while avoiding MB. Thanks

I hate to tell you, but you aren't even close to being correct. Local municipalities can make laws that are stricter than Federal law (ie requirement of helmets). Although I do agree with everything else you stated. Bike week is just that...a week long. There is no way bikers will go to New Bern for only 2 days. Bike week will still be in MB....just more concentrated in NMB where there are no restrictions

Bike Week in New Bern

It may only be 2 days for now but I have been going to MB for about 14 years now and after last year with the headquarters at the Hard Rock Park it just wasn't the same, just not as fun anymore. It is the same old thing every year the cops getting more hassling, I feel that the New Bern Rally will grow (if put on right) and turn into a week long event, I plan to go from Thursday thru Sunday and enjoy a change of pace, the hell with MB I'll spend my money in my own State!!! Besides everyone knows what really messed the whole thing up in the first place, and I don't think they will get rid of the other rally anyway.

I agree...we ALL know what really messed up bike week. But I just don't see things really working in New Bern at the Fair Grounds. MB is so spread out and it's really not that congested even with as many bikes that are there. I don't see enough room in New Bern if bike week to fully take off there

New Bern Rally

New Bern can not hold that many people by itself. What is not being told however, is that there is an area from Newbern to Morehead City (Beach Area) is about a 30 minute run between the two. Havelock has plenty of biker bars as well as Morehead having an outlet for bikers. All of which is along the Hwy 70 corridor. It is a decent ride and much of the hwy between Newbern and Kinston is open 70 mph zones. It has lots of potential if done right. Good Riding.

So, the ordinances were passed in MB due to a student being shot and killed in a dispute over a parking place. I thought there was more to the issue than was being discussed in this forum.
