School board may face lawsuit after Lil Wayne concert cancellation

READ MORE: School board may face lawsuit after Lil Wayne concert cancellation
WILMINGTON -- After weeks of controversy surrounding a gangster rap concert at New Hanover High School this weekend the rapper never took the stage. After an uproar from the community over the concert, the contract between the New Hanover County School Board and concert promoter to hold the concert at Brogden Hall is why the school board was forced to let the concert go on. Issues over the concert were raised because of fears of possible gang violence. The rapper, Lil Wayne, has publicly admitted to being in a gang. The school board responded to the concerns by canceling the concert. But when the concert promoter agreed to beef up security, the school board said the concert could go forward. Now the promoter claims that between controversy and cancellation, ticket sales were hurt and led to Lil Wanye pulling out at the last minute. The lawyer representing the promoter says the way it worked out, they only had a week to sell tickets. Chas Lineberry is the promoter's lawyer. He said, "Our client did everything he could to make the concert work for everybody -- for the community, and for the performer, and he just wasn't able to pull it together because of the time constraints." Again, there is some talk of litigation, but it's not clear at this point whether the promotions company will pursue a lawsuit. Either way, a lot of those involved lost money in this deal, including the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office who provided dozens of deputies to secure the event. After this fiasco the school board says it will re-examine its policy regarding the use of school facilities in the future.

rapper sueing school board

I would love to know what knowledgable and upstanding person who cares for his/her culture and heritage and wants to better their fellow man was stupid enough to contract that "lil" idiotic thug to "perform" here in the first place.

Long over

Aren't this thugs 15 minuets long over? Forget about this trash and his uneducated following.

People in the hood

We aint gots no internet in the hood homie.. Not unless my hot lapstop can find a free signal. So be get educated befores you speak !

Look who's in the news again

Looks like the beloved rapper has recently been arrested for ecstacy, cocaine, marijuana and other drugs....so much for all those that say he isn't a bad person

If he's such a bad person

If he's such a bad person why did they want him at they school? He must not be all that bad then.

Conflict of interest

I am responding to the remark about the conflict of interest with this attorney. Has anyone looked at that? Maybe they should especially if the attorney is involved with the school board!

Wayne is a SELL OUT

Lil Wayne is a damn sellll outtttt.. Be thankful you have fans cause if it wasn't for them, you wouldn't be getting the money you are. Sometimes you gotta do a little work for free, pro bono, to show the people that you aren't just a cold business man, but you also have a heart. Plenty of successful businesses do that; they give free samples of some kind to their customers out of good faith. I understand wanting to be on top of your money and getting paid for a job that you do professionally, but look at it this way, the man walks on stage and rhymes words to a beat. Like that's SO damn difficult and such HARD work. I've seen Wayne perform. THATS what he does. It's not like he's a KRS-One or Busta Rhymes who goes nuts and really puts on A PERFORMANCE. Some people work for a fraction of what he gets cleaning up shit in bathrooms jsut because thats what they have to do to get their money. Wayne should stop countin his money once in a while to count his BLESSINGS.

LIL WAYNE IS A PHONY

Lil Wayne is not in any gang. He is a liar, fake, and a phony. I can't stand it when people start claiming anything just cause they think it's cool. Like someone said earlier. It is "ALL AN IMAGE". Just cause he grew up in the hood don't make him in a gang. Who is his so called O.G.? How long he been in? He's a newbanger. Either way it goes it was WAYYYYYYYY DUMB to have him perform at the school. What are we teaching our kids? And we wonder why they act the way they do. Regardless to Lil Wayne faking the funk....look at the messages he sends out and yes our kids do listen!!! Being "hood" ain't (yes I said ain't) all it is cracked up to be. No musicians blasting hookers, drugs, banging, selling drugs, and anything slightly related to that category should be allowed in our schools. Entertainers gotta make their money but it doesn't have to be from our supporting them in our schools. We are sending our kids mixed messages when we do that. Who is to blame? We all our when we let it go on!!!!

I Agree! That Fool Aint in No Gang!

I completley agree...take them T.V. cameras to a less supported school. like in COlumbus, BLaden or Sampson Counties..where you can just FEEL the tension in the halls between two gangs when somethings going down! That idiot is no more in a gang than my grandmother! If all that was true he'd be shot and killed by now, according to the rules of all the gangs ive ever heard of.

Lil' Convention Center

I'm just really thankful and glad that this happened to a small venue and not something like the Convention Center after that thing get built. Now that would have created a monster of a problem and cost many times more law enforcement resources to police.

Re: Lil' Convention Center

Sorry to bust your bubble but it has already been lightly stated that the convention center will not host concerts. This is Saffo's little secret that he doesn't want you to know. Enjoy paying for it folks...and as usual, it's not for us little grunts.

Rights?

Being popular enough to sell out a venue is NOT a constitutional right. He lost the popularity contest and the people voted. Too bad for him. Any court will see it this way.

WHAT????

TWO THINGS. WHO IN THE WORLD EVERY SAID THAT LIL' WAYNE WAS THE BEST RAPPER ALIVE. SAY WHAT?!!! HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAAAHAHA!!! I'VE SEEN BETTER RAPPERS ON STREET CORNERS!!! I'M A MUSIC PRODUCER MYSELF WITH 27 YEARS OF HARDCORE EXPERIENCE AND THE IDEA HE IS IN THE TOP "ANYTHING" IS A JOKE PEOPLE!! THE RAP NOW IS SO,SO WATERED DOWN THAT IT'S ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS THAT THEY EVEN REACH PLATINUM STATUS NOW. LIL' WAYNE IS LIKE MOST OF THE RAPPERS TODAY, HE RELIES ON HIS TRACKS AND PRODUCERS TO CARRY THE LOAD BECAUSE LYRICALLY HE'S JUST AN AVERAGE MC. MOST PEOPLE LISTEN TO THE BEAT BEFORE ANYTHING ELSE, YA'LL KNOW THAT(ESPECIALLY IN A CLUB SETTING WITH LOUD SPEAKERS AND A DRIVING 808 BASS AND A HOT BEAT). HERE IS HOW YOU JUDGE A TRUE MC: 1.)ARE HIS LYRICS MEMORABLE(CAN PEOPLE REPEAT THEM AFTER YEARS OF NOT HEARING THEIR MUSIC) 2.) CAN HIS LYRICS BE EASILY DUPLICATED(IF THE AVERAGE JOE SMOE CAN DO THE SAME THING EASILY, THEY CAN'T BE TOO UNIQUE). OH YEAH, I ABSOLUTELY AGREE WITH EVERYONE THAT SAID THAT THIS TYPE OF THING DOES NOT BELONG IN A SCHOOL SETTING. WHY WOULD THIS EVEN BE CONSIDERED OR GIVEN AN EAR FOR DISCUSSION? LIL' WAYNE HOLLAS THAT HE'S A 'BLOOD' ALL DAY BUT EVERYONG IN THE GAME CLAIMS TO BE A GANG MEMBER. BIG DEAL. JUST BECAUSE YOU GREW UP IN A CERTAIN NEIGHBORHOOD DOESN'T AUTOMATICALLY MAKE YOU A GANG MEMBER.

Lawyer

Funny that the lawyer for the promoter has something to do with the school board as well. Sounds like a conflict of interest as well.

yall dont get it

it dont matter if he a blood n he got arrested for drugs yall acting like he's gunna go out theres and start claiming his gang and start sum b.s against other gangs he was just going to go out there and perform some songs he may say some gang related things but still people in every gang still listen to his music and ignore taht he is in another gang and juss listen to is music its better that he is a rapper and is not full time on the street selling drugs he is rappin and trying to make more money another way and this shouldnt even be a big deal they didnt have his money right so he turned it down i would do the same thing if i had a performance and was not getting paid what i want... and on a good note lil wayne is on a couple stop the violence tracks and did a concert before all this.. if you dont listen to hip hop music and you never experienced living in a hood or a bad neighborhood or just dont kno then u shouldnt have anything to say about this

Wow! guest#30

Is this how you really write and talk or are you just trying to be funny??? I hope you are just being funny.

guest# 30

obviously the only thing you should be listening to is the hooked-on-phonics cassette tapes that are provided with the hooked-on-phonics kit. you probably can find one on e-bay pretty cheap. besides that, all we hear about is living in da hood. backup and take a good look at yourself. are you living in the hood or living like a hood. the latter i presume. if you listen to this morons so called music then apparently you don't get it. it's as messed up as a cricket in a hubcap!

OK, so youre right, at least

OK, so youre right, at least he's not another hustler on the streets....but he aint Usher, so turning down a show like that because he's not getting paid the amount he wants just shows his own ignorance and lack of respect for his fans. And the growing up in a bad neighborhood with drugs & shoot ups & hardcore gang-bangin, aint nothing but a sorry excuse for living the way most people like that do.

YOU are the one that shouldn't be saying anything about this. The decent people of Wilmington spoke up and won this one for the kids. This sort of c-rap has no place near a school. His Ebonics laced lyrics are garbage, violent and a HUGE slap in the face to his own people. He used the N***** word so many times in his songs it even offended me and I am white ! His "music" is full of self hatred. How can you support someone who brings down his own people like he does, not only with his songs but his appearance and behavior. He has NO respect for black people or WOMEN. I have noticed that all who are defending this moron have the spelling and grammar abilities of 1st graders. That is so sad. But I guess you are all just "keeping it real"? (a saying for just being stupid??).

Lil' Wayne

Guess when Lil' Wayne realized that he wasn't going to be getting high ticket sales he decided to sit on the bus a refuse to perform. How far into the anticipated arrival did he realize he wasn't going to even get off the bus? There are a few things that come to mind... There are some parents that actually pay attention to what is going on within the entertainment world, with his current legal situations I am sure that alot of parents would find other entertainment for their children....with his gang affiliation most parents would openly NOT let their children go... after all he has openly admitted he is in a gang, which the school systems strongly oppose. Or was it maybe that there really aren't that many Lil' Wayne fans around the area? Does he really think he is that popular? This isn't LA or NY. Why did he want it inside? Why not some place like Legion Stadium? If the school system ends up paying him, then it will be a valuable lesson learned. Costly, But let's all get a closer look at that contract, does it say on there that if ticket sales are lower than anticipated the performer should sit outside on a bus? That he should not even appear? This is just another way for someone to get money for doing nothing. So he feels we should pay him $10,000.00 because he stayed on the bus? I would imagine this is not the first "failure to appear" for him professionally or legally for that matter. My message to you Lil' Wayne, you may not be as well liked as you would want everyone to think you are, and you don't deserve money for something you didn't do. Guess your other legal fees have gotten so high that you now have to sue high school systems to get those lawyers paid for your "other" legal problems

The reason he IS so popular

The reason he IS so popular is because parents DONT like him. Pop music has been that way for years and years and years. And now daddy's who fought tooth and nail from their baby's buying the new NWA album pay $8.50 a ticker to go see the Ice Cube movie "Are we there yet". Its all about money, the man is in the entertainment industry. If the cash wasn't provided, he wasn't performing. Its as simple as that. All you holier than thou's act as if its so much more. Its a business, his tough guy image is just that, an image. Anyone growing up in the hood is gonna have some gang affiliations.

No shows

He has many no shows. I read all about this loser. I feel that if he wants to sell tickets he should make himself marketable by being a decent human being NOT a drug taking, gang member. His loss, what a jerk.

I can't believe the school

I can't believe the school board was willing to have this type of crap in a public school. Are they trying to promote gang activity? Lil Wayne is a criminal and known gang member! Why would we bring this element into our schools when it's already bad enough? The excess security was a good idea to help prevent another drive by like the one that happened there a few weeks ago!

lol

WHOA just because he raps and sags his pants does not make him gangster, I hate when people see rappers and just assume that they're drug dealers and all that, I see it as people just expressing themselves in a different way.

Lil Wayne had Big Ego

The thug is a poser. He does some petty crime, glorifies it, exposes it as being wrongly ACCUSED, all the while he's trying to earn some sick street 'cred' with the youth. He's a PUNK in the purest form of the word. He's not expressing ANYTHANG that is even remotely individual or original in his whole persona. He looks, sounds, dresses, acts, blames, curses, acts disingenuinely shocked, and is self-centered just all the rest of the rap world. Every inch of this wannabe is orchestrated. What a man! And shame on the NHCBoE for pretending not to know.

HEY JOE

Where you been?? He is an admitted gang banger and has multiple drug arrests. He is due in court the end of this month in Atlanta for drugs. Your comment is a joke , right?

Lil Wayne

How about the citizens sue LIL Wayne for not showing up. Seems like the only person that violated the terms of the contract were Lil Wayne. I think he should have to perform for free and pay back the taxpayers for the money the county had to spend for security for a concert that he never appeared for. Seems sorta funny that he was out "partying" with the boys when he was suppose to be performing. Guess he is represented legally by Dewey Cheatham and Howe. This LIL Wayne is like a hurricane, all the excitement and anticipation and it ended in diseaster and cost us the taxpayers money.

"Concert"

The school board gave in to public pressure to have this concert and where did it get them? The good citizens of New Hanover County may have to cough up some money to pay for the no-show of a "rapper" criminal. Maybe they need to re-think their policies. Also, I read in the paper where one lady was upset because she spent her last $120.00 so she and her daughters could see him. Maybe she needs to re-think her priorities. There are more important things she could do with that money, and probably would set a better example than a concert for him!

UNBELIEVEABLE!

As reported by TMZ.com AND I QUOTE..... "When the crowd didn't grow, some of the 80 sheriffs and officers in attendance offered to raise the money themselves to get Wayne to perform! The extra dough couldn't be raised until Monday, which wasn't good enough for the rapper, who left without appearing. "" http://www.tmz.com/2007/10/22/lil-wayne-big-a-hole/

cops did not do that

The cops did not try to help, they were just the opposite. How can someone say crap like that and get away with it? Wake up people the sheriff shut this thing down with his 140 deputies and all his terror tactics. Giving money, what a freakin joke!
