Scientists concerned about rise of sea level

Climate experts came to the Port City today to talk about sea level rise. Some of their findings don't bode well for our coast. Our coastline is being attacked by polar ice caps thousands of miles away, and its happening faster than we think. The sand and surf at Wrightsville Beach could be just surf in another century. “At some point we will have to move some infrastructure from barrier islands, because the island itself will be moving underneath the infrastructure,” said Brooks Yeager, VP of Clean Air Cool Planet. Sea level around the world is on the rise and experts visiting Wilmington Tuesday said the latest numbers leave part of Wilmington underwater. This animation shows the future 'coastline' around the Port City with the predicted rise of one meter over the next century. That means Wrightsville Beach may be gone. “If you're thinking that you're going to pass along your home on to your children and grandchildren, this predicted sea level rise should make you think about whether that's going to be possible or not,” Yeagar said. NASA chief scientist Richard Bindschadler says the problem the changing polar ice caps. “It's one of the most direct connections that illustrates how what happens thousands of miles away does come to meet us right in our own front and backyards.” These predictions have real consequences. Sea-level rise can result in the loss of millions of dollars in property value, tax revenue, and tourism that would cripple the area's economy. So what can communities do in the meantime? “Accept what the science says is happening and plan for it early rather than late,” Bindschadler said. If nothing is done now, too late might be sooner than we think “There will always be a beach somewhere, but it might be a lot further inland than we wish it was,” Yeagar said. There are steps you can take to fight sea level rise at home. Conserving energy will help reduce carbon emissions, the main culprit in climate change.

This is just a fund-raising

This is just a fund-raising tour for special interests. "Oh the sky is falling and I need a taxpayer funded job to stop it!". Better hurry and sell before 2100.

Well..

IF ANYONE would have bothered to do a little geologic history study...they would find that the ice shelf has only been around about TEN PERCENT of the Earths existence...its come and gone MANY TIMES throughout Earth's history...this time is no different.

what did we do before wacky scientists?

Wow...THANKS you brilliant doctors...youve enlightened us on something that stupid people living oceanfront should already be aware of. They shouldnt be covered by insurance and the government should not be called in to help make the land rebuildable after storms or after the dreaded icebergs melt, god forbid. Are their really people that dont know the history of our planet and understand its a living, breathing organism thats constantly changing? gimme a break...

Insurance is all about risk and odds

If I can make money by insuring people who build their houses on shifting sands in a state where the government mismanages the insurance industry at a level of incompetence rarely seen, why shouldn't I? Get the state OUT of setting rates and spreading risk among everyone and see how many people build McMansions on barrier islands once they hear what the annual insurance premium will be! Lots of money to be made helping people shovel sand against the tide....

Well said commonsense...

New Hanover County had their home insurance rates jacked up by 17% to help pay the risk on those beach front properties! That's like everyone have to share the health risk of smokers but we all know that smokers pay higher premiums, so what gives on this beach house deal? Maybe if we didn't have all realtors (who own beach front homes?) on the city council, they would have stuck up for us a little better. Time to get realtors out of office, remember this on election day! McCoy, Clarke, Dehart for City Council Knight for Mayor

The light here is dim.....

That's not a very intelligent statement for a "Dr." to make. So with that mentality, we shouldn't insure homes in the midwest because of floods and tornadoes or homes in Colorado becaise of blizzards or homes in California because of fires, wind, ladslides and earthquakes or homes in Wyoming because of dust storms and cowpies or homes in Idaho because of militia men or homes in West Virginia because of ice storms or homes in Alaska because it freezes there? You must be one of those "Honorary Doctors" like Jesse Jackson...

no

There was nothing wrong with the Dr's post. All the things you say could happen. We all know what the Dr. said WILL happen.

Could happen?

What do you mean these things COULD happen? They DO happen!!! Every year, every one of these described events (with the exception of humor) DO happen! My point was about the great "Dr.s" comment about not insuring coastal property. And to your point of, "We all know what the Dr. said WILL happen." Really now? How do we know when it hasn't happened in our existence? It is so comical to listen to people preach the "Al Gore" school of global warming and instant anhialation. Do you realize that man only has at the very best 75 good years of data keeping concerning the earths climate? That would equate to .00000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 seconds of the earths clock. Hardly enough trend analysis data to predict what is likely only a normal cyclical event. There is true fear in the lack of knowledge and understanding.

I know these things happen

I know these things happen everyday, but we don't exactly where its gonna happen. I wasn't talking about Al,I was kinda talking about erosion and such {Shell Island}. I don't think they sell too many global warming policies, but I'm sure if you want to buy one they sure will take your money.I don't give a hoot about global warming. If its true it will be long time coming and most of us will be long gone.I don't see anything wrong with building on the water,I was just saying the "Dr" was not that wrong.
