A forum at UNCW Wednesday night discussed the possibility of adding a football team to the university's athletic program. Students and Administration got together for a forum. Most students were in favor of adding football team. Student fees would have to go up to foot the bill, but for foot ball, it's a price some students say they're willing to pay. "I think that it would be great. I think that it would bring more unity to our school," UNCW Freshman Kayla Morton said. The idea of a UNCW football team already has it's cheerleaders, but students are concerned about the cost of starting a new team. "It's a good idea, but unfortunately since uncw is so small, we don't have the funds for it," Senior Matt Dornbeck said. The forum presented the challenges of starting a football team. One of them, is how to pay for it. It might mean doubling student fees from more than three hundred dollars to more than seven hundred. "If the students are willing to increase that fee, then the administration needs to look at that, and then the university as a whole, we definitely need to research it," Student Body President Dan Thorpe said. Right now, UNCW has 19 sports. The athletic department says money is already tight for scholarships, recruiting and travel. The athletic department says, while football would be a great addition to the university, the priority has to be on the current programs. "Any sport addition here would be a good thing, but again, I have to go back to the 19 that we have. Challenging our students to come out and support those," Kelly Landry-Mehrtens, The university Athletic Director said. Another issue is title nine. That means, under federal law, if a men's football team is added, and so are scholarships, then the same total of scholarships would have to be added to the women's athletic program. Either that, or they'd have to cut men's programs to keep a level playing field.
