Deputies have called it a brutal murder, and on Wednesday search warrants revealed some gruesome information about the deaths of Jim and Laura Gallagher. The search warrant indicates bloody knives, and a hammer were taken from the crime scene, as evidence. Mrs. Gallagher's 33-year-old son, Gerard Altman is charged with the murders, a week after Laura and Jim Gallagher's bodies were found in their home at 424 West Ridge Court in Odgen. The search warrants indicate there was a blood trail through their home. Mr. Gallagher's body was found by detectives in the living room, while Mrs. Gallagher's body was found in a bedroom. Both had visible wounds and were already dead when authorities arrived. "You never really expect something like this in the suburbs of Wilmington I guess, it's shocking,” said neighbor Brad Bloomquist. Preliminary autopsy results indicate that the Gallagher's died from blunt force trauma. In addition to a hammer and knives, other pieces of evidence collected from the crime scene were blood stained gauze and towels, two cell phones, and clothing which may belong to the suspect. After connecting him to the crime, detectives obtained a search warrant for Altman's apartment at 2621 Confederate Drive. Search warrants show detectives found two crumpled checks with Mrs. Gallagher's name on them inside Altman's apartment along with knives, stained clothing, and a prescription label in the name of James Gallagher for oxycodone. “It is pretty mind boggling when you've seen both the victims and the suspect within walking distance of your house,” said neighbor Britt Peverall. Altman remains behind bars tonight, charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He could face the death penalty if convicted.
