Wilmington's Fifth Annual Secret Garden Tour kicked off today. The tour brings dozens of green thumbs to gardens behind some of the city's historic homes. Friday's weather couldn't keep Wilmington’s Jo Elliott and her friend Sherry indoors. “Oh, my friend Sherry said that it's such a beautiful day, that we need to take advantage of it,” said Elliott. So Jo and Sherry decided to spend their afternoon at the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society's Fifth Annual Secret Garden Tour. The tour starts at the historic Latimer House. Elliott said, “It just gives so much back to you, it's so good to see something come from a seed and just grow and blossom into something beautiful.” So what exactly is the secret of the garden tours? Dee Eicher, President of the Lower Cape Fear Historical Society said, “These little jewels hidden behind these Victorian homes are inspirational for those who want to create the things they see in there own gardens at home.” Eighteen dollars upfront is all it takes for visitors to find those hidden treasures throughout Wilmington's historical district. The money goes towards the Historical Society's educational programs, general upkeep of the Latimer House and its gardens. Gardens that inspire Jo to get to work in her own backyard. “I'm expecting to get a lot of ideas,” she said. The Secret Garden will continue Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.
