RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - State Sen. Julia Boseman says she won't seek a fourth term in the Senate next year, citing family responsibilities. The New Hanover County Democrat announced Thursday her decision to leave the Senate when her term ends at the end of 2010. Boseman was the first openly gay person elected to the General Assembly in 2004. Boseman said in a statement she wanted to be closer to home because her partner is having a baby in January. The Wilmington attorney helped push through legislation this year that requires all school districts to approve detailed anti-bullying policies. Conservatives opposed the bill because they argued it would give special rights to gays and lesbians. Her departure gives an opportunity for Republicans to win back the swing district seat. Thank you Julia!

Ignore the vocal minority!! More of us appreciate all you did for us. You are truly a public servant and we commend you for your honorable service!

Credibility of this website

I would like to see the factual information that supports this blanket statement: "...districts to approve detailed anti-bullying policies. Conservatives opposed the bill because they argued it would give special rights to gays and lesbians."

Sorry to see her go!

Say what you want about Senator Boseman, she always brought home the bacon for New Hanover County! Personally, I could give a damn about her personal life. She had a great effectiveness rating, she got things done, and that's what matters. New Hanover County is going to have a hard time finding someone who is as dedicated and feisty in the Good Ol' Boy's Club in Raleigh! So long, JB! We'll miss you!

Senator Julia Boseman

Sen. Boseman was a fine County Commissioner, an amazing State Senator , and a terrific all around public servant. I thank her for all of her efforts in helping my business, for the concern she has for my family and my community. I will miss her greatly, and PROUDLY support her in future endeavors. Double thanks for the Lottery !!

Senator Boseman

Senator Julia Boseman has been an outstanding leader in the NC Senate and will be missed by millions of North Carolinians. She has proved to be a strong leader and will be truly missed! We wish her all the best! Thank you Julia for everything!

Senator Julia Boseman's Announcement

Senator Bosemman is true to her community, to Southeastern NC, and to her family! We will miss her. It has been great calling her "my" senator! I wish her and her family well!

I am sure Senator Boseman's service will continue in great ways.

Her success in the Senate has be a point of pride for me as a NC native. I have never felt particularly represented by a majority of elected officials over the years but I did with Senator Boseman. Her work on the anti-bullying policies will live well beyond our lifetimes and will truly make a difference. How many of us are leaving that kind of legacy? Thank you for your passion and service.

As a long time friend of Julia Boseman

As a long time friend of Julia's, I have the utmost respect for her and admire her desire to have a happy family. I say GO JULIA, you do what God tells you to do and enjoy your family as you should. I will be here to vote for you again when you are running for president 2012?! Thank you Julia

Perhaps greater things await...

Julia was a good County Commissioner, an even better State Senator and a great all around public servant. Regardless of her reasons for leaving I, for one, think our county will be worse off without her input and vigilance.

So is Michael Lee going to

So is Michael Lee going to run again??

Understandable but sad

Senator Boseman will be missed. I and many others are thankful for her work in the Senate.

Julia Boseman is, and has

Julia Boseman is, and has been, a staunch supporter of NHC. I, for one, hope she goes on with her political career. She is one of the VERY few people in office who have a vested interest in the constiuents needs, and she works damn hard for this county and it's citizens.

Terrible loss

It is very sad that Ms. Boseman is not running for re election. She provided terrific service to the community. We are all losers with her retirement. I wish her well.

Ignorant Haters Don't Change The Truth

Julia Boseman has served us very well these past 5 years- and before that as a County Commissioner. Her loyalty has always been to her community- and she has acted on our behalf and had a very positive and lasting impact on the well-being of our citizens. I wish her only happiness and success in the future. Hateful untrue and bigoted comments are just what people who don't know better or have anything good to say about anyone resort to.

Thank you for your service!

Sen. Boseman has been an amazing representative for our state. Her ability to work across party lines was a breath of fresh air. Thank you for your service and dedication, you will be missed in Raleigh

I think Julia worked very

I think Julia worked very hard and took some hits she did not deserve. Thank you for your service to our community and I hope things are gentler for you after this!

Lucky to have had her for this long

new hanover county had, for the first time in years. representation that brought us back money from raleigh, focus on southeastern north carolina for our families, jobs and a power in legislation in the Senate. We had not had that for a long time. We owe a great debt of gratitude to Senator Boseman for serving this area for so long and so well! We can only hope that there will be a candidate who will do so again and with as much courage and foritude!

Sen. Julia Boseman serves with dignity and honors her district

Well said, we are lucky to have Julia Boseman for this long. She was raised a patriot and imbued with the generous spirit to commit her work for Public Service. The good she has done for New Hanover County and SE North Carolina is invaluable!

Dignity??? Where in the

Dignity??? Where in the world have YOU been?

Perhaps

she can encourage R C Soles to join her in retirement. He could act as the child's Godfather; and frankly as a lobbyist, his activities would likely fall below the radar screen.

LOL

I doubt she would have won re-election anyway...and she knows that...I don't think ANY incumbent is safe next year that is running.

You are right. It's amazing

You are right. It's amazing that so many are so clueless. Its a good time to pull out because she doesn't want to lose.

Great

That has got to be the best news of the year. See ya

GOOD RIDDENS!

GOOD RIDDENS!

Fairytales do come true!

Thank you GOD that this corrupt woman is not seeking re-election!!

Don't let the door hit you on the ... on the way out!!

Time to get someone honest

Time to get someone honest and respectable who honors values. Nope, don't care about the gay thing- but someone who honors promises, respects people and respects truth. Great news! But good luck to her with the baby!

julia b. has served us well

and we'll miss her. it's been nice to have an actual progressive representing us here in wilmington. as for that "corrupt" comment... it's very easy to post that kind of thing on a web page. kind of like running over a kitten -- you just keep going and hope nobody saw you. but if you have proof, please share. otherwise, shut up. please. dt

Huh. Not sure who wrote you

Huh. Not sure who wrote you originally, but um---where have you been? There has been more proof about this "womans" character than ANYONE would need to deduct the fact that she was corrupt---and at the very least, used her assumed "power" to influence. You try not paying taxes and transferring monies to avoid penalty and lying and smoking dope and wow, the list just goes on, really. Did you not read the transcripts? What honor does she have?

How about the fact that she

How about the fact that she didn't pay taxes on property she owned. You try that and see where it gets you.

Joe the Plumber

Your boy Joe the plumber didn't pay his and look where it got him.I don't think not paying property taxes makes you corrupt,it makes you lose your property. Also I would like to say to "Everybody Knows Me Tom" that your post is pretty ignorant.
