WILMINGTON -- It's a dreaded day for many, and it's quickly approaching. April 15 is the deadline to mail your taxes. But there is hope if you haven't filed yet. For the last 31 years the New Hanover County Senior Center has been doing people's taxes for free. And this year is no exception. Senior center volunteers take training courses and learn the IRS's rules and regulations. The best part is you don't have to be a senior to get the free help. Anyone can simply show up at the Senior Center before 7:00 p.m. on April 15 and have their taxes done. Volunteer program coordinator Cheryl Hoffman recommends coming early -- and expect to wait. The New Hanover County Senior Center tax program will be available Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from noon until 7:00 p.m. Also, if you're waiting until the last minute to mail off your taxes keep in mind that Tuesday -- April 15 -- the local post offices will close at 5:00 p.m. UPS stores will be open until 6:30 p.m., but you have to be in the building by 6:00.
