Cape Fear Public Utility Authority Operations crews responded to and resolved an SSO of approximately 3,500 gallons that was reported on Saturday afternoon, February 27th at a manhole located on the Ogden Interceptor sewer main between the end of Jamey Court and the intersection of Grathwol Noland Drives in Wilmington. The first notification received of this SSO was at 3:15 PM; responding crews stopped the overflow at 3:45 PM. The spill went into Smith Creek.
The cause of the overflow was a blockage of a pump that was being used to bypass sewage around a failed section of the Ogden Interceptor. The blockage of the pump was caused by a heavy accumulation of fibrous debris, wipes, paper and rags. Customers throughout the system are reminded to refrain from flushing any materials other than toilet paper and human waste. Many products, although labeled as ‘flushable’, do not break down and cause blockages of the sewer system.
CFPUA Environment and Safety Management has performed and will continue water quality monitoring to determine the impact of the spill.
NC DWQ has been notified of the spill and the response.

cfpua rates are too high
I do not like anything about this authority since it's inception. Financially, they are holding all of us hostage to high rates. If I see a pipe leaking or any imperfection in their operation , I call it in. Everyone has their hands in working people's pockets in this community.Vote All incumbents out regardless of party affiliation in New Hanover County because they threw this upon the people. You would think consolidating operations would result in lower cost being passed along to the consumer.....but over the years our elected officials let it get in such disrepair due to misguided priorities.Maintaining basic infrastructure is one of the primary responsibilities of
government and they have failed us miserably ! TIME TO FLUSH OUR LOCAL ELECTED OFFICIALS DOWN THE TOILET !
Tell me again why we are
Tell me again why we are forced to do business with these people and can't have a septic tank. Oh, thats right septic tanks are environmentally unsafe. Thank goodness this company keeps our sewage out of our local waterways and lands.
I agree..im sick of this
I agree..im sick of this company, its bad enough they had an issue when they took over in their billing system that caused bills to run 6 months behind, and then all of a sudden we get smacked with $500 water bills. Now they have sewage running into creeks. Great Job CFPUA. It's expensive enough on its own. Just another way for them to suck money out of our pockets...
Berger Was Right on CFPUA, Let's Elect Him NOW!
I remember that Brian Berger who's running for County Commissioner has been one of the few leaders in town to raise concerns about the Utility Authority, while it was being created by special interests and our elected officials in the pockets of special interests.
It's that foresight, intelligence and courage we need in New Hanover County. Every Republican and indepedent voters should take the time to vote for Berger in the Republican Primary.
He's the best candidate, gutsy and he gets it, and we need more like him here in Wilmington.
If you don't vote for people like Berger, and there might be others who are free of special interest influence, then stop complaining!
