Shallotte family leaves mark on town

SHALLOTTE -- This week we've been taking an inside look at Shallotte, a Brunswick County town. The Milliken family is one family that has been in Shallotte since the town was established. Alton Milliken is nearly 80 years old and has lived in Shallotte his entire life. He said, "My great grandfather and his two brothers owned all of Shallotte one time." Milliken was captain of the Shallotte High School basketball team and has a passion for racing. He founded Shallotte Electric in 1971. One of his two sons, Al Jr., said, "I don't know if he planned that or if it just worked out good for our family that he decided to get in the wholesale plumbing and supply business at that time." Milliken and his wife, E.B., have another son and four grandchildren. Their grandchildren are the eighth generation of Millikens in Shallotte. They all help run Shallotte Electric. E.B. said, "We love living in Shallotte. We loved starting the business and now the business is doing well but I realize the most fun we had was starting the business." The Millikens have been married for 56 years and said they can't begin to describe the changes they've seen in Shallotte. "I am just really proud to be a resident of Shallotte and Brunswick County because of the, the way i think we have handled our growth," E.B. said. Shallotte isn't the place it was when Milliken was growing up on a farm there, but he said there's no place else he'd rather be. He said, "It is the greatest place in the world to live."
