Shelter flush with dog house donations, still needs other items

READ MORE: Shelter flush with dog house donations, still needs other items

BURGAW, NC (WWAY) -- Dogs living outside at the Pender County Animal Shelter now have shelter from the wind. Thanks to the overwhelming response from our viewers, every dog now has its own house.

Last week the shelter needed 40 dog houses to comply with state law. Thanks to all of the donations, the shelter has more than enough houses, but it still needs blankets, towels and food.

There are nearly 75 dogs at the shelter and 60 of them are outside in the cold. Though they do all have houses, they still need something the cuddle up with.

Jane Hampton, a volunteer for Friends of the Shelter, said there is still a lot that could be done.

"With the colder temperatures, especially this week, these dogs are outside, and they do need the blankets to help keep them warm, because the dog houses do protect them, but they need the warmth," Hampton said.

Along with small blankets and towels, Hampton said what they need the most are volunteers and adoptions. The shelter can only hold 75 dogs. If there is not enough space, some will have to be euthanized.

If you're interested in volunteering or adopting a pet, you can visit the shelter Monday through Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. The shelter is located at 3280 New Savannah Road in Burgaw. Or call (910) 465-2030.

Blankets needed

The dollar store and Roses has polar fleece blakets for cheap. They are easy to wash and come out the washer practically already dry. My Great Dane has one and she LOVES it.
I've already purchased some to take up there.

shelter dogs

we are asking for blankets because they can be washed....

shelter dogs

the shelter can't use hay....but they can use blankets because they can be taken out and washed daily...

Pender Shelter

Hay is not used at the shelter because it will clog up the current drain lines.

Hay would be better than blankets.

if anyone could donate hay bales, they can be used for bedding in the houses.

Donate straw not hay

It's better to donate wheat's more soft and supple than hay which is brittle and can prick the animals. They also have less alergic reactions to wheat straw.
Most feed stores carry it and I know for sure Farmers Supply in Wilmington has it...that's where I buy it for my dogs.
