Shooting Provinces of Night in Pender County

READ MORE: Shooting Provinces of Night in Pender County
It is a slightly overcast morning in the small Pender County town of Atkinson; almost a kind of dreariness that seems to fit in well with the principal theme of Provinces of Night. The movie is about a rural Tennessee family whose lives are filled with self destruction. It is a script that attracted Grammy Award winner, Kris Kristofferson. “I was really hoping I could do it. For a while it didn't look like I could because I had concerts at the same time we were going, but then they changed the date so I got too,” he said. Kristofferson's character is the family patriarch, a role he said he easily slipped into. “He's old for one thing,” said Kristofferson. “He's a songwriter and a singer and drinker, not a big stretch for me.” Young actor Reece Thompson joined the cast as Kristofferson's grandson. Thompson said, “Once all these great actors started flowing in I got really scared, but excited, because I was like, ‘Why am I in this?’.” Screenwriter W. Earl Brown is on set. For him, watching filming take place is still hard to believe. “After the rough road we had there is still the element of, ‘Are we really doing this?’” he said. That is because this project is at least five years in the making. Three years ago, planning began to take place. Now, after two weeks, filming is nearly halfway finished. Once it wraps, then comes the process of getting the movie distributed. Kris Kristofferson also wrote and recorded a song for the movie. The cast also includes Faye Dunaway and Hillary Duff. Filming wraps May 19th. Thursday, we will speak with the cast and crew about filming in rural Pender County.
