Billy - this company has asked to pollute to the maximum amount allowed by law, when technology exists, and is in use at their other facilities, to pollute less. Politicians are motivated to expedite the permits by their own self-interest - they want to be able to claim that they created the jobs. Any idiot can sacrifice everything and create jobs with huge externalized costs - the air and water pollution, noise, road wear, health care costs associated with elevated pollution, etc. In granting permits, health consequences of the plant will not be considered, and neither will the obvious fact that air pollution lands in our waterways. How many other gaps are there in the process? You weren't even aware of these failures, because as an ideologue, you have not investigated at all - you've closed your eyes to facts and logic. You're entitled to your own opinion, but you are not entitled to your own facts. The process that brought us this project is broken, and the process that grants permits is even more dysfunctional. Take a few minutes and educate yourself about what you are asking for. Smart people could be creating jobs if they were not spending their time defending themselves and their families from proposals like this. Mark my words, people will move away - companies will relocate taking jobs with them - people and companies that would have considered Wilmington in the future will write it off as the polluter haven that it has been and apparently will continue to be.
we are talking about less than 200 jobs! that won't make a dent on wilmington's unemployment rate. titan will poison our air and water!!! you may think tourists are a hassle but they are a huge part of our local economy and once our pollution rates skyrocket you can kiss those tourist dollars goodbye. and what about keeping our children healthy?
you don't have the proof to show that they are going to do anything! Second..."we are talking about less than 200 jobs! that won't make a dent on wilmington's unemployment rate." Tell that to someone trying to feed their family right now who is without a job!
Where DID you get that crystal ball?
"The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"
..."Yes, because they have done everything to satisfy existing law?"
The laws are 50 yrs old and that is why they need to be required to get a special use permit. However, the Z&P Board seem to think that the "Borg" is more important than the members of our community.
Lawyers and Developers pull the strings in Wilmington and the puppets jump on command.
...but it is still the law and the only requirements are listed therein. If we were too lazy to update the law, it's our fault and Titan shouldn't be penalized.
why do you continue with the "don't Know/ Don't care" category? Those people need to be sent to outer Mongolia for a few years. maybe by the time they got back, they would have learned something about learning and caring.
For you people who support Titan. What if you are wrong? If you are wrong its not like gee we can make them close and the problem goes away. You are potentially causing a life threatening and JOB threatening situation which will affect the entire commmunity for many many years. There are only a very few decent paying jobs anyway. You believe Titan has a good heart. Is this the type company you want in Wilmington. One who uses its wealth to silence debate from a single mother. What kind of company sues a single mom for public debate. This is supposed to be the land of freedom and free speech.
Titan does not even have a good record of caring for the community or the environment. Read about how often they flaunt the laws they have promised to adhere to. Check out the recent avoidance of rules in FLA. Why did the commissioners keep the negotiations secret? Why did they suddenly unveil the huge payout and then gave the public 2 days notice to respond. That SMELLS.
Why after many requests to postpone the permit is it suddenly approved? If you can tell me that there is virtually no way Titan can harm our environment and not harm our fishing, our tourism our people The Risk far outweighs the meager return and if you are wrong we will all do down for a little return.
I'd rather breath clean air and drink clean water than have a few jobs in the area. And who says these are going to be good-paying jobs? No, thanks, Titan! Take this mess to SC, where it's already contaminated!
