Should homosexuals be allowed to serve openly in the US Military?

Show some love

Why do people want to use religion when it's convient for them? Yes, the bible says that homosexuality is wrong but it also list many other things that are sinful so unless you are going to prevent everyone who sins from serving in the military, then that is not a valid arguement. God is not allowed in any other government venue so why would you think that he would have a place in this arguement? Sin is sin, plain and simple! If coachs can't pray with their teams before a game then don't drag God into your Gay-bashing. He loves them all, regardless of their sin. The bible also says that it's not our place to judge but that's exactly what you are doing. What does an adulterer look like? What does a gossiper look like? Are you going to keep these people out of the military too? It is ridiculous to judge these people for one sin when we all sin daily. We would have no army if we kept all the sinners out. Why can't we just show them love and let them figure out their own salvation?

San Fransicko East

Wilmington,N.C is San Fransicko East. Any community that has a large arts and film presence attracts these deviant individuals. Also, the city council at one time was trying to make Wilmington a more gay friendly community. So asking the citizens of Wilmington whether gays should be allowed in the military ,is silly. Go to Jacksonville, N.C or Fayetteville, N.C to conduct your poll. Wilmington,N.C is not Main Street, U.S.A when it comes to homosexuals. We are a magnet for these deviants. I was in the military and I would not feel comfortable in a community shower with gays. The gays have made considerable inroads in their agenda by making it acceptable. President Barry will have his politically correct generals toe the line in reversing this policy. President Barry and the gays are indicative of the steady degradation of our secular society !

who are we to pass judgement

my comment is more of a question....... who are any of us to judge?? we are not here to judge anyone, thats for God to do. all of you may or may not have valid points, but really where do any of you get off judging others gay or straight? women: would you like to revert back to being barefoot and pregnant with no right to vote, work, or serve in our military? men: do you really want to do all the work yourselves and marry "uneducated" weak women? if men and women are equals and we are able to essentailly perform the same jobs, giving birth the exception, then how is a person who is homosexual cant do the same? just my thoughts. agian who are we to judge.

Judging

You are correct, we are not to judge. However, if you are going to use the standard of the Bible, let's use the Bible. It is very clear in Romans 1, that it is a deviant behavior, period. The Bible calls for you to be Holy, as the Lord is Holy, without which you will not see the Lord. So, to be against behavior that God calls an abomination isn't wrong. it's how we may treat the abominable ones that can be wrong. we are to love them without judging them. It doesn't mean we can't say that their particular behavior is wrong. Ofcourse their are many abominable behaviors listed in the Bible...not just the homosexual bandwagon every one likes to jump on. Try idolatry, lying, stealing, etc.

Gay or Not

There are gay men and women in the military right now and its a don't ask don't tell policy that should stay in effect. I am not trying to judge people for how they live but I do not believe in that way of life and GOD will be the judge of EVERYONE. I do have some friends that are gay they keep their affections toward another in their home just like everyone should. I am married and i do not go around making out in front of children and others to prove a point or that my way is right and I do not think others should. I know some gays would not make comments while in the showers but there would be some that would and that will be the problem. It is the same as a man taking a shower with a woman as a gay woman taking a shower with them, if someone says it not then they are lying and trying to prove what they won't is right. if a woman is attracted to another woman (man/man) then they will be checking them out just like they would if they are at a bar or other place people go to meet. Do you think it is right to have coed showers or sleeping quaters? if not than you can not (without lying to yourself) say it is ok to have gays in the service say they are gay because it will cause problems. Some people know when someone is gay anyway and they do have a hard time in the service. (take a poll on that)I am proud of everyone in the service no matter how they believe, like I said before I am not here to judge. Everyone needs to read the BIBLE and take it for what it says not twist it to prove their way is right. I am sorry but if it was meant for men to be with men and women to be with women we would all be made the same or at least men and women both would be able to get the other pregnant and be able give birth to a baby.
may God watch over all men and women in the service, and I hope that they all still pray.

Not a Policy

For your information there is no such thing as the Don't tell Don't ask policy. President Clinton never signed it so that congress could act on it. So any and all arguments about this are bogus!

respect from both sides

All it takes is self control and a little self discipline for gays and straights to co-exist in the military. It's a job, a really tough job and should be treated as such, with self respect, respect for others and a display of maturity.

gay soldiers

I cant for the life of me figure out why anyone gay would want to join the military unless it is serve in the band or stateside somewhere out of harms way. We just arent into that blood sport.

And since when is sex important anyway on the battle field. If you are having sex behind enemy lines you are either having gay sex or you are raping some villager. Think about it, nobody has "normal" sex in the military.

individual rights

"Gay rights are civil rights and we're back in the 50s and 60s again."

You only seem concerned about gay rights. What about my rights. I'm a strong believer in individual rights, but their rights end where mine begin. And to believe that as strongly as I do, the reverse has to be true as well. I'm not homophobic, but I'm also not sure how comfortable I would be, having to shower with openly gay men. Don't ask, don't tell works, leave it alone.

Practice what we preach

If we pride ourselves in being a country that is free and affords the same rights to every citizen we need to practice what we preach. Gay rights are civil rights and we're back in the 50s and 60s again. Home of the FREE and brave. There are many gays serving as we speak in silence. What agony! How honorable is it to have a gay man or woman serve and sacrifice for a country that doesn't embrace them and sees them as a lesser person. Shame on us! Let them serve openly!

Civil rights in the military

Once you sign your name on the dotted line and raise your right arm, there are MANY restrictions on your civil rights.

You no longer enjoy freedom of speech; you can't bad-mouth the commander-in-chief or the officers appointed over you.

As a junior enlisted man, you can't just decide that you want to call in sick tomorrow. Private or general, you can't just quit your job whenever the mood strikes you.

Insisting that you keep your sexual preference to yourself might seem like a horrible invasion of rights to a civilian who has never lived in close quarters where your very survival depends upon teamwork, but it is worth it to preserve order and good discipline.

There are numerous reasons

There are numerous reasons why gays should not be allowed to serve. However, those with a pro-homosexual agenda aren't willing to hear anything but their own view point. Their goal is complete acceptance, anything else just will not do. There is a concerted effort to force acceptance of this lifestyle. Yet, those who cry tolerance are never tolerant to those who hold conservative values. the hypocracy is more than apparant!

There are numerous reasons

Really, and what are they ?

I can tolerate anyone as

I can tolerate anyone as long as they don't tell ME what I can and cannot do with MY body and life. Conservatives tend to think they know what is best for everyone else, especially if they have not walked a half-moon in that person's mocassins. Conservative 'values' are primitive and destructive in my experience; think the Battle at Wounded Knee, the goal was to 'convert peacefully or by force', because the Natives were different, now entire cultures are withering.

okay so what are those

okay so what are those reasons?

Also, I don't see anyone trying to revoke the rights of those who "hold conservative values".

There is a different between someone accepting someone for who they are and denying someone rights because of who they are. The first is based on personal opinions & beliefs (so be a homophobe or a racist or whatever all you want), but the 2nd is flat out oppression, when you DENY someone the ability to live life the same way as everyone else then that is a completely different story.

gays in the military

I am a 43 year old gay man. My father is a retired Lt. Colonel in the Marine Corps. The first man who I ever dated and with whom I was in a committed relationship was a Harrier pilot in the Marine Corps; a Harrier pilot whose image was used in a recruiting poster for the U. S. M. C. I would bet that you, dear reader, wouldn't know a homosexual soldier or Marine if one hit you hit in the face. Gays have been in the military since day one, and to think otherwise is to have your head in the sand. It is 2010, and bigotry and ignorance cannot be condoned. The whole idea of "lifestyle" is a ridiculous code-word; who in their right mind would choose a "lifestyle" that makes one the target of prejudice and hate? I laugh at people who cloak themselves in the title of patriots, yet fail to support the liberty and freedom of all Americans. Prejudice and bigotry against me today, could be prejudice and bigotry against any other group tomorrow.

First of all its "hypocrisy"

First of all its "hypocrisy" and "apparent," but you should take a second and look at your argument. The only part of what you said that is any way an argument is : there are many reasons that gays should not be allowed to serve. Instead of actually supporting this with evidence you turned it around on those who believe in complete acceptance, and attacked those people. Make a valid point and maybe those of us who believe in Universal Human Rights will listen to you.

Gays in Military

When I saw this story I asked my son what he thought about gays in the military. He just recently came back from basic training. His response was they should not be allowed in there openly. I asked him why not and he said If you have 100 men taking a shower at the same time and there were gay men in there, then there would be lots of fights and problems. He said the men and women did not shower together for a reason and the military is no place for gay men. He said that while in basic training there was a gay man in his unit but no one never knew it until the final week of training. When the soldier's sexuality was discovered--there were problems. This gay man made a comment about another man's physique while int he shower. Our men/women that are fighting for our country have enough to worry about without havng to deal with this issue. The military is not the place!

This reason deals more with

This reason deals more with one's insecurities than it does anything else.

If someone is secure in their own sexuality, then someone elses shouldn't have any affect of theirs.

Do people really believe that every single gay person constantly thinks about sex all of the time? I know straight people who are a million times more hornier than any gay person I know. Oh misconceptions. Believe what you will.

If you found out your surgeon was gay would you decline receiving treatment? One's sexuality does not affect their job performance or have anything to do with their intelligence or skills. Judging by the comments on this website, I'd assume gay people are more intelligent than their counterparts!

Why not?

Give me 10 valid reasons why the shouldn't and I would consider saying no...there are none, not one valid reason why not outside of religious convictions, just fear mongering and hatred, it's easy to pass judgement on another who is not 'just like you'.
Ridiculous

Gay in the Military

The Military is not a place for Sexuality Period. I think sexuality should be private and NOT define a person weather straight or gay.
Leave it in the bedroom people.

It's not normal behavior

We weren't designed to have sex with the same gender, not to mention the health risks involved. Trying to force them to intermingle will only cause problems that don't belong on the battlefield.

You may not like it but the vast majority of people on the planet are straight. Our public restrooms are gender segregated for a reason...

Normal Behavior?

normal behavior? what IS normal behavior? what normal behavior is to you may be totally different to the person standing beside you. and i assume you think that straight sex has no health risks at all? thats why no straight people contract STD's? lol, and you think the majority of people on earth are straight? what ROCK do you live under? lol. wow, you sound like a very educated individual.

To answer your question

Normal; conforming to the standard or the common type; usual; not abnormal; regular; natural.

I could care less if you agree with me or not. The rock you live under and your education are up for debate as well.

Religious Reasons?

Even that's a canard. There's only one bit in the Bible that condemns homosexuality, and it's in that same infamous bit of Leviticus that condemns blended fabrics and shellfish. And that chunk of stuff is part of what Jesus 'invalidated,' so Jews might be able to object on religious reasons, but not Christians.

But fortunately, this is not a theocracy so even if it were printed on every page in forty point type, it wouldn't matter.

Sounds like you need to

Sounds like you need to actually read the Bible for yourself instead of relying on some heresay from your friends.

This is just one - Romans 1:27 - "Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due."

Read the entire first chapter of Romans, you might learn some things about our society.

There are literally dozens of passages (ex-Gal. 5:19) that speak against fornication, which is ANY sex outside of the marriage relationship as defined in the Bible.

read the New Testament

read the New Testament lately?

Stone Age

Intolerace like this further illustrates how humanely primitive and socially behind the rest of the world America (mainly NC) is and is content to stay. A homosexual can shoot or man equipment no worse than any straight person can. I agree with what Joe the Plumber above said, " if you can be disbarred from service simply based on sexuality, then why not for religion or race"? Discrimination, plain and simple.

Honestly what goes on

Honestly what goes on between Gay couples behind closed doors is none of my business. If they want to fight for us and defend us then let them. Why should we care if the soldier who gave their life for AMERICA is gay, strait, or yellow, black or white?

All this hate will breed only trouble. Seriously what is next if we ban gays from the military? Are we going to do to them what we did to african americans? Are we going to give seperate bathrooms and water fountains? Hey why not segregate them altogether?

I find this whole thing offensive. Let them join our military. Let them defend our country. They are citizens too.

Gays in the Military

Barry Goldwater said it best. You don't have to be straight to be a good solider, you just have to shoot straight.
