Slow economy increases library traffic

The slow economy has renewed interest in the public library. New Hanover County Library officials say that they have seen a seven percent increase in customer traffic. People are using the libraries resources to find jobs and learn new skills. Library leaders also say 50 percent of all customers use the free internet access and wireless internet connection. NHC Library Assistant Director Harry Tuchmayer said, "This is historic over time, as the economy tightens up libraries become more and more important to a community." Tuchmayer manages the Downtown Wilmington Library. He says the sleepy economy has many people preferring to check out books rather than buy them from bookstores.
