Can't beleive all the fuss over chocolate milk!! I have always drank chocolate milk, my kids did and my grandchildren love it and guess what? None of us are fat!
How much chocolate milk does a person need to drink in order to become fat from it? I don't think it is chocolate milk at school or home making America's kids fat. It has a lot to do with parents who let the tv and game systems etc babysit their kids instead of saying "go out and play"! It's all the processed fatty "easy" foods shoved in their mouths. Bags of burgers tossed at them. Lazy adults make for fat kids!
Leave the low fat chocolate milk in schools---it isn't the problem.
Take a look at the type food offered instead and stop cutting physical education programs!!!

I had to chime in on this- Yes i think that it is our responsibility as parents to dictate what our children eat and don't eat. However; there are many children in our school systems that have parents that couldn't care two cents about them or dont have the funds to provide healthy choices for their children. Alot of these children can't afford to eat at home so sometimes the only meal they get is at school. It should be nutritious and delicious... not processed pizza and chicken nuggets. Healthy eating is something most of America is just ignorant on. There needs to be an overhaul of nutrition reform in our country. There needs to be better choices, period. Who wants their kids eating processed food when there are other options that are around the same price and so much healthier. Yes, it may take a little more work to prepare but isn't it worth it?
Why are we providing flavored milk to children when white milk will serve the same purpose? Flavored milk has more sugar in it than one can of soda... that's insane! Lets say you do teach your children healthy habits... do you expect a 10 or 11 year old kid to CHOOSE white milk when their parents aren't there? Id like to think so but hate to say that's probablly not going to be the case.
Just my two cents! Turned into more like 30... :0)
Why should anyone ELSE care? Every aspect of life is survival of the fittest, and my only concern is that MY kids grow up into healthy adults. (Which they did, despite being allowed to drink chocolate milk!) Why should my grandchildren have to give up the freedom of drink chocolate milk because other kids are getting fat?
BTW, on a personal note, I drank my weight in whole milk and Hershey's syrup every week up until I joined the Marine Corps at age seventeen, standing 5'11" and weighing in at 155 when I took the oath at the AFEES station. Even more shocking - Marine Corps messhalls serve chocolate milk!
If the lard-butts would expend some calories, they'd find that the 266 calories in eight ounces of low-fat chocolate milk really don't mean very much.
No....expending calories would be "toooooo harrrrrddddd." Instead, we'll simply accept that as a nation we have turned into lazy, fat slugs and have governments at all levels impinge on everyone's freedom by restricting everything from chocolate milk to salt.
....if you'd get them off the couch, turn off the Playstation and go get some exercise! Oh, but that would require mom and dad providing some kind of example, wouldn't it?
If you have fat kids, don't try to pin it on the chocolate milk.

If you want your kid to drink chocolate milk, pack it in their lunch box. If they don't have the choice to drink flavored milk at school, then they will drink white milk or the real fruit juice that is offered. Would it really be that terrible to eliminate it? For those of you suggesting that we simply teach our kids how unhealthy it is, that is a lovely idea.. most kids know what the better choice is. However, when kindergartners are given free reign in the cafeteria, what do you think they are going to go for? They are kids! Seems like the least we can do as adults would be to provide the best options.

100% fruit juice or is it full of high fructose corn syrup? YOU can provide the best option for YOUR kid, don't try to tell me what is best for MY kids. When I was in school I ate 4 bags of french fries for lunch everyday in the cafeteria. I am not fat, do you know why? Because I did not sit in front of the TV or computer and play games all day long. I was outside playing.
Once again government trying to dictate how we should live OUR lives. My child will NEVER attend a government school even if it means I eat beans and rice 7 days a week.

Get over yourselves. Why in the heck does everyone want or expect the government to control most every aspect of your lives?
I drank chocolate milk every Tuesday and Thursday from Kindergarten to my Senior year of High School. I am not overweight.
The PARENTS should be responsible for teaching their children to eat well, and not NOT OVERINDULGE. Instead of 4 or 5 servings of chocolate milk a day, teach them to drink only 1 or 2. Also, get your lazy kids from in front of the tv, computer or video game console and actually go outside and learn how to be a kid. Yardwork is a good thing for young teenagers too. That's what I had to do when I was a kid. There wasn't a computer to do everything for me, you actually played with your friends OUTSIDE in the sun and dirt, and sometimes even the rain. When I was a kid, Cable TV only had 36 or so channels, not 400 like we have now.
That's whats wrong with the great country of ours today. The few want to control all, but they should be more worried about themselves instead of everyone else.
If my kid wants chocolate milk, guess what....he gets it, no mroe than 1 glass a day. And I dont need the darn government to look out for me on that one.
There is a SERIOUS lack of acountability and responsibility in this country today.
I dont want the government in any more of my business than they are already in.

The milk in school has nothing to do with fat kids.. They are lazy and either on the computor all day or x-box (playstation).
How about making them just go outside and PLAY like we did when we were kids..

Your children well! Control for everything in Life!
If you teach those chubby cheeked little munchkins the HORRIBLE ramifications of making poor choices of what has always been acceptable children's foods and drink, or that almost everything in 'moderation' is no longer acceptable, your kid will turn out to be a "perfect eater" like you.
Were you the one who came to a neighborhood cook-out and couldn't adapt to the social environment when everyone was eating what you coined "carcinoginic rawhide", as you touted your perfectness by pulling out a baggie of organic carrots.
You may believe that chocolate milk is POISON, but most normal people do not.

I have been drinking milk from cows before you could get pasturized milk in the stores and Coke Cacola every day since I was born and I'm not over weight. I am 65 years old, still drinking milk and coke cscola.

...And besides not being over-weight, you certainly have good strong bones and teeth from drinking all of that milk.
If we can keep Obama out of our refrigerators, maybe, just maybe, we can CONTINUE to make our own decisions about the food and drink we literally put into our "pie hole." I love Freedom, that is why I choose to live in AMERICA.
Have you noticed how much Mrs. Obama is on the bandwagon with this? Who does she think she is.... Mrs. Huxstable???? "Cliff, do not eat that potato chip."
Old Cosby Show re-runs must've given her the idea to harp on what OTHER people eat.

I pack my daughter's lunch and she takes a thermos of chocolate milk. It's the only time I let her have chocolate milk. I use skim milk and use less syrup. It's not only healthier than soda. It's healthier than juice and has more calcium and vitamins than water.

Chocolate Milk here to stay!
Wonderful commentary Mary!
My sentiments exactly! Mothers and fathers make the food and drink choices for their children. Not school boards and socialist government parties.
Otherwise, pretty soon, they will be on our doorsteps condemning us for not reinforcing at home what THEY have dictated in the school lunch room.
