One of the most important parts of Azalea Festival week are the flowers themselves, but some of them are coming in late.
The cold winter has delayed the bloom of the azaleas by about a week to ten days. Some varieties are blooming just fine now, but mid and late season bloomers have yet to blossom. Even though the blooms are delayed, the recent warm spell has them making up for lost time.
“It’s been extremely helpful,” says Jim McDaniel of Airlie Gardens. “It brought the azaleas in on time for the Azalea Festival, but it usually does. There's always some good color, especially in our area.”
Believe it or not, Airlie Gardens is home to five-hundred thousand azaleas. Not to mention other spring bloomers including tulips, Chinese firs, and flowering dogwoods.
