Some believe new fishing regulations are off the hook

A new federal regulation could have crippling effects on the local commercial fishing industry. Come the end of this month, Amendment 16 will put limits on snapper and grouper fishing. After a trip out to sea, employees at star seafood count their bounty. Local fisherman Bill Greer is part owner of the only snapper, grouper house in Brunswick County. He says there's a lot of fish in the sea, but the government says not so. According to NOAA, “We're removing fish at too fast of a rate. And all of these fish stocks have a certain productivity and if you remove fish at too high a rate, then you're going to drive their populations downward.” Come July 29th, an amendment to the government's fishery management plan will not only place limits on how many snapper and grouper can be caught, but it will also halt fishing all together several months out of the year. NOAA says is it necessary for preserving the ecosystem; maintaining fish populations is their responsibility. Greer's not convinced. "The ocean is slap jam full of fish, my guys can prove it.” He believes the snapper population might actually be increasing. "Yeah, I don't know if I’m going to be able to make it. They’re railroading us out of business on faulty data. It’s not right, it’s un-American as far as I’m concerned." Greer says about 80 percent of the fish you see on a menu are imported. He says when these regulations go through, it may be impossible to get a local catch on a menu. NOAA stated, “We're willing to accept short term losses that could have long term economic gains by having high stocks, high yields and health ecosystems.” But in a down economy, Greer says the losses mean his business might go under. Amendment 16 will also affect recreational fishermen; it will limit catches to three grouper and five snapper per day. Reeling in these fish also is prohibited all together several months out of the year.

HURRAYyyy

ABOUT TIME the commercial guys have some restrictions on them like this. They really DON'T care about the fish....throw out a net and catch a bunch of red fish...BY CATCH..TOSS EM...catch a few turtles, which are allowed....they die..SO WHAT. Commercial fishermen are some of the RUDEST individuals on the water. They need MORE restrictions on them if you ask me. They need to change with the times and be a little more careful on their by catch. GILL NETS....NEED TO GO COMPLETELY! All of this coming from someone who hunts and fishes...but I GET IT...they don't. If I hunted something and the numbers were down...CLOSE THE SEASON until they rebound...it's better than never seeing the game ever again.

No decline in fishing

The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council has imposed the restrictions based on data that was collected ten years ago off the Florida Coast to meet the requirements of the Magnuson-Stevenson act. More recent data in mid atlantic states indicate that the fisheries are thriving. This amendment only affects States along the East Coast from North Carolina to Florida. So the fish stop at the Virginia/North Carolina border? This decision makes about as much since as the Closings of The Cape Hateras National Seashore for birds. More bad news for North Carolina's local economies.

Fishing

If you check out the pictures on the local fishing websites you will see it is a take all and everything mentality that has brought the fish stocks down. Some say they are up but I've fished and lived on the coast my entire life and they are nothing compared to what they were when I was a boy. Certainly all the kill tournaments do not help either.

If you check out your facts...

If you were to check out your facts and educate yourself you would understand that NOAA and the fisheries management folks are using data that is more than a decade old and not even from this area. Not to mention that this fisheries management plan will do absolutely nothing to deter fishing of the waters off of our coast by boats from other countries who are not bound by any rules but their own. Until you educate yourself and get the truth about what is truly going on here I would suggest that you kindly take your hand out of my pocket. I have a home to maintain and children to feed and educate.

I am sure that for the past

I am sure that for the past "decade" NOAA has been doing nothing, but using data they collected many years ago? Yea right, try to justify it all you want, but you are wrong sir. You should understand sustainability, or you won't have any fish on the table.
