Southport is looking to expand

The city of Southport is looking to expand. Last night the Board of Alderman voted 5 to 1 to move toward annexing 80 acres. The intended expansion includes land along North Atlantic Avenue, Jabbertown Road and across the Progress Energy Cooling Canal. The city originally hoped to annex areas near Long Beach Road and Highway 211, but the town of Oak Island grabbed that territory first.

If you live next to a city, you can get annexed. It's not so much a diabolical plot, as a sign of growth. When newly annexed residents do not receive city services in a timely fashion, or feel that they are paying for services they do not approve, well, welcome to government. Yes, the problem is with government operation--AND proper representation. Make your representatives and government employees accountable. Just don't try to hide, especially right next to the line!
