The town of Southport may also lose one of it's precious treasures.
The state has Southport's Maritime Museum on the chopping block for programs to cut, in the midst of a $2 billion budget shortfall. State officials said the maritime museum costs the state more than $160,000 each year.
Southport Mayor, Sandra Spencer said, "I think it would be a terrible loss to Southport and our surrounding area. Our museum has done a tremendous job and we are so very proud of it. I am personally doing as much as I can to help it survive."
The mayor said the city of Southport will look into ways of possibly saving the museum.
