Spanish radio station hits air

READ MORE:
It's the first of it's kind to hit the local air waves. The growth of the Hispanic population in our area has given way to a new radio station. Tuning into 98.7 sounds much different than it did a few days ago. La Gran D, or, "The Big One" hit the air waves as the first Spanish station in our area. WLGD La Gran D aims to serve the more than 100,000 Hispanics living in our region. Operations Manager Jeff Sanchez said, "There is a huge population of Hispanics here, and it is primarily Mexican, but it's not 100 percent Mexican. You have people from South America and Central America as well." The station will not only broadcast Latin music 24 hours a day but also offer news and community service programming to people who some say have been otherwise tuned out. Amigos International President Lucy Vasquez said, "There is a need to unite the Latino community get them informed in a better way, and I think this is what was needed to move this community forward." Sanchez said, "You can hear music that you are familiar with, you can hear language being spoken that you can understand -- not that a lot of people don't speak English but it's in their native language, which I'm sure is a big relief to a lot of people." La Gran D eventually plans to offer some bilingual programming and play more than Mexican music to encompass various Latin genres. La Gran D hopes to channel the Latin community and unite listeners. "The Hispanic community wants to be apart of this community here and the American community here wants to cater to this community, so I mean, it's like a bridge that's just been built and we're at the forefront of it, which is super exciting."

Awesome!

I have been fortunate enough to be brought up in a diverse environment, where most people know 2 or more languages or at least have the desire to learn more languages. Whether its spanish, chinese, japanese, hmong, french, or other dialects, I think it is a huge step forward to be able to listen to other languages on the radio (other than english). It's sad to read the posts below mine, and see that everyone makes this into a race issue. This country is KNOWN for being the "melting pot", so what's the surprise?

Please

Dear Mr. President, Senate and House of Representatives: I'm planning to move my family and extended family (20-30 mouths) into Mexico for my health, and I would like to ask you to assist me. We're planning to simply walk across the border from the U.S. Into Mexico, and we'll need your help to make a few arrangements. We plan to skip all the legal stuff like visas, passports, immigration quotas and laws. I'm sure they handle those things the same way you do here. So, would you mind telling your buddy, President Calderon, that I'm on my way over? Please let him know that I will be expecting the following: 1. Free medical care for my entire family. 2. English-speaking government bureaucrats for all services I might need, whether I use them or not. 3. All Mexico government forms need to also be printed in English. 4. I want my kids to be taught Spanish By English-speaking (bi-lingual) teachers. 5. Schools need to include classes on American culture and history. 6. I want my kids to see the American flag on one of the flag poles at their school. 7. Please plan to feed my kids at school for both breakfast and lunch. 8. I will need a local Mexican driver's license so I can get easy access to government services. 9. I do plan to get a car and drive in Mexico, but, I don't plan to purchase car insurance, and I probably won't make any special effort to learn local traffic laws. 10. In case one of the Mexican police officers does not get the memo from their president to leave me alone, please be sure that every patrol car has at least one English-speaking officer. 11. I plan to fly the U.S. Flag from my house top, put U.S. Flag decals on my car, and have a gigantic celebration on July 4th, and I do not want any complaints or negative comments from the locals. 12. I would also like to have a nice job without paying any taxes, or have any labor or tax laws enforced on any business I may start. 13. Please have the president tell all the Mexican people to be extremely nice and never say a critical things about me or my family, or about the strain we might place on their economy. I know this is an easy request because you already do all these things for all his people who come to the U.S. From Mexico. I am sure that President Calderon won't mind returning the favor if you ask him nicely. Thank you so much for your kind help. Sincerely, US Citizen & Taxpayer

spanish radio station

Well, if so many of you think it is OK to have spanish radio....what about arabic?....the same arguments apply. good of America?

arabic listen to radio

Shows how much you know... It is against the Arabic Religion to listen to music.. The problems I have with the illegals are they are under paid for the work they do and they are given no benefits by their employer. I doubt their employer pays taxes on them. I would not be surprised if taxes weren’t taken out of their pay. I would find it hard to believe that you wouldn’t try to go to another country to work and live if the conditions were better there than where you lived.

Arabic , Jewish, Martian,

So you have no problem with anyone being illegal and you know they are underpaid and not "GIVEN no benefits"...hmmm. So, Laws of other countries mean nothing as long as people are trying to make a better life and we should cater to them?

Let's look at the time line.

To speak about immigrants and having it my way, I would first begin by sending all the English back to Britain, The Irish, The Italians, Greeeks and Poles/Croates/, ect back from where they came. Someone cannot just come over take what is not theirs and not pay a price. It might take another 200 yrs but this country will go back to it's rightful owners. Radio, do some serious research and see how NBC (Owns Telemundo) Time Warner Turner Broadcasting Univision (American Private Owned Company) Liberman Broadcasting Clear Channel Ent. All these giants have large investments in spanish radio, not everything is about good ol country music or rock and roll. Profits have increased (due to the wetbacks buying power, Im mexican myself) in this country and more companies are investing in spanish radio/tv. Stop being racists all of you gringos, hope that Hugo Chavez and his buddies dont wisen up along with China, N. Korea and the rest of latin america. You will not see the end of it like you did back in 64 during vietnam And to be truthful the spending power of my people have kept many of you sorry middle class suburb dwellers with a steady paycheck.

IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, THEN

IF YOU DONT LIKE IT, THEN JUST DONT LISTEN TO IT, SIMPLE AS THAT. WHY ARE YOU GUYS MAKING SUCH A BIG DEAL OUT OF IT??? SHOULD I SAY RACISM?? OH AND HERES THE DEFINITION FOR Racism: has many definitions, the most common being that members of one racial group consider themselves intrinsically superior to members of other racial groups. Racism inherently starts with the assumption that there are taxonomic differences between different groups of people. Without this assumption, prejudices against different peoples would be categorized as being prejudices related to national or regional origin, religion, occupation, social status or some other distinction. I THINK THAT APPLIES TO ALL THOSE WHO ARE TALKING DOWN ON MEXICANS OR OTHER LATINOS.

Ye Ole' Race Card

Here legally, no problem. Racism also applies to people that think they should have a radio station especially for them in a country that speaks English and then tells the majority, IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, THEN DON'T LISTEN...

Not about illegals

This forum was not supposed to be about illegal immigration you Knotheads! This gripe was about losing a really good radio station. Why not replace WWIL instead of WRQR Rock 104.5 Nextmedia is responsible for this travesty. Now they have another station that sucks.

It is called CAPATILIZUM!

From the start let me state, I believe we have a huge problem in this country with illegal aliens. Not "undocumented workers", as their presence is in violation of our laws they are in fact here illegally and not being from this county they are ILLEGAL ALIENS! No bleeding heart in my chest here. Spanish only radio station? So what? Some entrepreneur recognizing the numbers of Hispanics in the area decides to take advantage of that an starts this business. The is capitalism and American. Like a widget salesman, the market either exist or it does not. If so, good for him and if not, he goes out of business. The success or failure of this station will be determined by one and only one thing. The Market. Not conservatives or liberals but, the market. Don't speak Spanish? Me either. My guess is you will do like me and not be tuning in. But to take a stand against a person making a living by offering a product that has a market is UN-American in itself. This station will sell advertising time. I am sure some other local businesses will take advantage or reaching this market through this station. That could be a good thing for them. Again, if local businesses feel their is no market there, they won't be buying time. Again, this radio station will succeed or fail like every other business. It will succeed or fail on the rules of capitalism. I don't like county music. I don't propose all the country stations be shut down. I just don't listen to them. However, with the known market for C&W, I sure would like to own one! The issue of illegals and the presence of a legal business are two and seperate issues. Don't confuse and/or compare the two.

Just for the record, did you

Just for the record, did you wear anything green on St Patricks Day? That's Irish tradition, not American. Let the people keep their traditions by listening to their culture of music and news, thats why this country is so big and powerful. Enjoy good food in Calle Ocho festival in Miami, or a Greek festival in Winston Salem, or Polish party in Chicago, the Marti Gras in New Orleans (French...), Jewish holidays and the Italians celebrations in New York City. We all have a great deal to learn and enjoy from each others cultures.

Have we ALL forgotten?????

Have we ALL forgotten????? Unless you are a Native American we all came from another country! Columbus discovered America and took it from the Indians! So, where did your family come from??? And as well as I know from history, Columbus didnt have a green card.

I-PODS RULE

Who listens to the radio unless they have sattelite?

IGNORANCE

OK so you think it is wrong to have a spanish raido station. FYI there are MANY Americans who speak spanish! After all Porto Rico is part of the USA....now you need to educate yourself and stop being so ignorant! I think it is wonderful to have a spanish raido station. After all would you not also make accomidations for those who couldnot hear or speak english (E.g. those who use sign language or need to use braiel to read and commuicate). You need to understand that not all hispanics are illegal..after all how can people being a certian nationality be against the law..there has always been some form of predujice in the USA and that is what is happening now.....no one is completley white, black, orange or green..color or nationallity doesnt matter....all people should have the same benifits.. no matter how they are or where they come from....so know that just because some people speak spanish does not -make them non-american...so get over it!

Re: Ignorance

So I need to educate myself and stop being so ignorant? Actually, I would rather have someone who is an expert educate me on what ever subject I desire absorb. What I have been taught is multiculturalism, tolerance and altruism toward one another. What I get in return is segregation, intolerance and the scream of racism anytime a question is raised about, ahem, fairness. Imagine the shrills that would be heard if an all white radio station was to air. Imagine the violence that would erupt if the spigot of preferential hiring and race based welfare were cut off. Are we going to be a multicultural nation that emotionally supports one another or are we going to be a separatist, bickering bunch of whiners who will never get along no matter what, because of one sided separatism.

Bleeding hearts

So according to you, everyone should just shut up and ignore the 30 million (and counting) illegal aliens that have just strolled across our borders and continue to ignore and break our laws. I have no problem with ANY legal American. Subtract the ones here ILLEGALLY and the number of Mexicans here would be very small. I don't care if they are polka dotted from Polkaville. Just because they are here, doesn't mean we have to coddle them by giving them all the things that legal Americans have fought and died for. We speak English in this country not Spanish. I'm sick of the bleeding hearts that want to hand this country over just because they are here. The majority illegally. IGNORANCE? Look in the mirror. Porto Rico is spelled Puerto Rico, raido is spelled radio, predujice is spelled prejudice, nationallity is spelled nationality...

LMAO

LMAO

Radio

Stacy, you just don't get it do you???? The legal Latinos are welcomed because they embrace this country and want to become American citizens. Those that are legal and have served in the Arm Forces I have respect for those Latinos. But I do not think that illegals have the right to demand or ask for anything in this country. To Americans this is just a slap in the face. What's next, TV stations all in Spanish and if you want to watch you have to learn Spanish??? I have lived in Puerto Rico and they do not have TV or radio stations in English for Americans. All English speaking stations that are provided for the Americans are done so by affiliates of the Arm Forces or by satellite. Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the USA. They do not pay USA taxes. They do not want us there. It is you that needs to quit being so ignorant. It is not our responsibilty to accommodate the illegals by seeing to it that they have radio, TV, or any other facility in Spanish for their convenience. You must be part of the politically correct Liberal system, which is bringing this country down to its knees. ALL people living in this country illegally have not earned the right for anything. Do you think you can understand that??????????

psssttt

there ARE spanish only tv stations.... yet amazingly there is still room for plenty of English speaking stations. Funny how the airwaves seem to have unlimited space and there is room for variety. :) Puerto Ricans have payroll taxes taken from their paychecks, but typically don't pay the "federal withholding" portion. They are US citizens and do pay into the system.

guest3 FYI

"What's next, TV stations all in Spanish and if you want to watch you have to learn Spanish???" Uhhh....they already have those on Time Warner cable. I do not speak Spanish and I do not have a child to translate for me like the Mexicans around here do. See, all 4 of my kids forgot what Spanish they learned in high school, did not make much of an impression I guess. So therefore I can not watch the NON-english channels. I feel violated. ;)

Cable

Das, I don't have cable or satellite, just an old antenna. So I did not know that there were already shows on TV in Spanish.

I don't think this has

I don't think this has anything to do with illegal immigrants what so ever. There are several Latinos in our area that are here legally. What is wrong with them having a radio station to listen to? Illegal immigration is a completely different issue that I won't get into now

Sarcasm on---maybe we need

Sarcasm on---maybe we need separate stations for legals and illegals.--sarcasm off.

Truth on- - -

You must be able to read, write, and speak simple English to become a citizen. You can be barred from citizenship if; 1. You have been convicted of a crime. 2. You have ever lied to an immigration officer, consular official, or government official. 3. You married solely to obtain residency status. 4. Since becoming a lawful permanent resident, you have been absent from the United States for long periods of time, especially periods over one year. 5. You have ever been arrested. 6. You failed to file an income tax return for any year since becoming a lawful permanent resident. 7. You owe child support Truth off---most Mexicans in this country are legal.

True, most are here legally,

True, most are here legally, but that doesn't excuse the ones that are not

satellite radio

Satellite radio is the answer. You don't hear commercials for Pat and Ashley or Peanut & Davey. There is always something on worth listening to on satellite.

spanish radio station

this is getting more absurb. having a special spanish radion station for millions of illegal immigrants is way out of line. why do we keep on giving these illegal immmigration previleges and how about other legal immigrants, like german, french, japanese, etc. their radio stations. we shouldn't be encouraging illegals to enjoy the benefits. regards

Who cares?

Tubas and accordians. It all sounds the same to me. Oompa music. boom, boom, boomboomboom, boom, boom, boomboomboom,

la musica

is very diverse. You are speaking of a particular style of music and it doesn't even scratch the surface of what the hispanic music industry has to offer. There is rock, metal, hip hop, reageatton, christian, bachata, salsa and merengue, as well as a large number of different regional mexican styles. Give it a chance... you may find something that interests you.

Mexmedia dumps American worker and listeners

I don't have a problem with adding a Latin radio station to the area for legal Latin residents, but dropping American workers and listeners to replace them with a station that promotes not learning and speaking the language of this country is wrong. These people should be doing all they can to adapt to our english speaking country as our immigrant relatives did when they arrived to this country. You don't see any French, Italian, German, or any other language radio stations do you? The reason is when these people came to America they learned English and became Americans. The Mexican people are expecting us to bend over backwards for them while they make American money and send most of it back to Mexico. Most of the Mexicans I have met in the working world tell me they plan to stay here 10 years while they send most of their money home and then return to Mexico and live like kings. They put as many people in one house and own one car and split all the bills so they can send back as much money as possible. Smart plan to save money to live here, but this isn't the case. Is this the way we want to live, giving our money to people who have no plans to spend it here and keep our economy strong. I know that American workers were given pink slips and all the faithful Rock listeners were thrown aside to make the almighty dollar. This is an insult to all who listened to the station and supported the advertisers who spent good money to get their message out to them. I would have been pleased to see a new station created for these people, but not throw away American workers and listeners who have spent 10 years supporting the station. But adding a new station would have cost Nextmedia money and that's not the way they work. Instead they fire Americans take their paychecks and give that money to promote Mexicans who won't learn the language or spend the money where they made it. All people no matter where they are from deserve the right to work and make money and that's not the issue. The issue is the money they make should stay here and Americans should not have to suffer and lose their jobs. Where will this end? Could your job be next? The precident has now been made by big corp radio who will follow their lead? I hope for Gods sake it's not you or me!!
