WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- For the past year, Cape Fear Community College has been getting ready for a new edition. No, not a new building or parking deck. The Sea Devils added women's basketball as the school's seventh sport.
Today Head Coach Lori Drake announced the school's inaugural signing class on campus.
"I've worked all year for this one day," Drake said. "They've worked their whole lives for this day."
After Drake put in countless hours planning and recruiting, today she introduced seven of 11 members making up the first ever women's basketball team at CFCC.
"It's not easy recruiting players into a brand new program," Drake said. "They have nothing to go off of, no other players to feed from."
It was an exciting day for coach and player alike. The signees include two former Ashley High School standouts: Amanda Yoworski and Ashley Altman.
Now that the pen has hit the paper, the team can look forward to playing ball next winter.
"I know some people will underestimate us, because we are the first team, but Coach Drake is a really good coach," Lady Sea Devil Alexis Redd said. "We'll see where she takes us."
CFCC Athletics Director Robert McGee said, "We expect to great things this year, right off the bat. Regardless of it being an inaugural year, we expect to be competitive. I think we have not only the coach, but as you saw today some recruits at a high level that can compete."
Setting the inaugural schedule is underway. The CFCC women's basketball team opens its first season in November.
