UNCW holds off ECU Pirates in men's basketball; Atkins scores 40 for Seahawk women

UNCW handcuffed rival East Carolina on 28 percent shooting and set a season high with 11 blocks to shackle the Pirates 66-54 in a holiday men’s basketball clash on Saturday night at Trask Coliseum. The UNCW women basketball team also won on Saturday. It's hard to lose when Kelva Atkins tallies 40 points. The Seahawks won their second straight game to improve to 5-3 on the season and won for the 12th time in the last 13 meetings against their rivals at Trask Coliseum. The Pirates dipped under .500 with the loss and stand 5-6 on the campaign.

videoFriday's Full Court Press on WWAY featured a basketball doubleheader at Brogden Hall between New Hanover and Ashley. It turned out to be a Wildcat type of night with New Hanover winning both the boys and the girls game. We unveiled the "Full Court Press Watch List" for the first time this season. The list will likely change as the season progresses. Plus more!

West Brunswick boys improve to 10-0 in basketball; BCC men win too

videoThe West Brunswick Trojans sit on top of the Mideastern Conference with a 3-0 league mark and an overall record of 10-0. We checked in with the Trojans on Thursday. West Brunswick beat arch rival South Brunswick by 15 points. We also checked out college action involving Brunswick Community College.

Trevon Brown update; former New Hanover Wildcat trying to get back on field for ECU

videoFormer New Hanover Wildcat Trevon Brown hasn't seen any game action for the East Carolina Pirates since a knee injury two months ago. Brown had to miss the last five games for ECU. According to East Carolina head coach Ruffin McNeill the Wilmington wide receiver is anxious to get back on the field for the upcoming Birmingham Bowl against the Florida Gators.

UNCW holds off Liberty in OT

videoUNCW head basketball coach Kevin Keatts said last year's UNCW team would have found a way to lose Wednesday's home game against the Liberty Flames. As it turns out, UNCW won a sloppy, physical game in overtime to improve to 4-3 on the season. The game was highlighted by a handful of dunks. We hope you get a chance to check out the rim rockers on our video. On Wednesday we also showcased BCC men's hoops, UNCW women's basketball and Laney wrestling.

Hoggard dunks over North Brunswick, West Brunswick stays undefeated & Laney falls in OT

videoThe North Brunswick boys did not put up much resistance to Hoggard on Tuesday night. Dunks from Xavier Johnson energized the crowd and the Vikings rolled to an easy win. We had our sports cameras in Shallotte too. West Brunswick remains undefeated. Laney lost in overtime against Scotland County. We were there for that one as well. We did showcase a victory from the Laney girls though.

North Brunswick dominates rival South Brunswick

videoThe 2014-15 high school basketball season has been one long struggle for the boys basketball team at South Brunswick. The Cougars have only managed to win once. On Monday the struggles continued for the Cougars. Arch-rival North Brunswick defeated South Brunswick 67-46. Josh White scored a season high 25 points for North Brunswick. UNCW more than holds their own with Louisville

videoMost basketball fans expected 4th ranked Louisville to pounce on UNCW. Louisville did win on Sunday night, but the game proved to be much closer than expected. In fact UNCW pulled within two points of the Cardinals late in the second half, yet Rick Pitino's club pulled away at the end to win by double digits. UNCW head coach Kevin Keatts is a former assistant coach at Louisville. Check out our game highlights tonight at 11pm on WWAY.
