Season tips off for high school basketball

videoThe public high schools aren't permitted to play regular season basketball games until next Monday. Some teams won't even tip off the new season until December. That's not the case for Coastal Christian. The Centurions opened the 2014-15 basketball season on Wednesday night. Of course, we were there.

videoThe North Brunswick Scorpions finished the 2014 regular season with a 6-5 record after winning their last two games in convincing fashion. In the regular season finale the Scorpions defeated East Duplin 26-7. We recognized North Brunswick on Wednesday with the WWAY Farm Bureau Insurance at Mayfaire Team of the Week award. It'll be the final team of the week presentation in football this year.

Season ends in "4-A East Finals" for New Hanover boys soccer team

videoBroughton High School will play for a state soccer championship on Saturday after beating New Hanover on Tuesday in the "4-A East Finals" for boys high school soccer. WWAY made the trip to Raleigh. Check out our game highlights and postgame reaction. The latest AP rankings are out for high school football. Hoggard finally breaks into the top ten. Plus, we have an update on Wil Baumann, a former Hoggard punter who leads the ACC in punting.

videoUNCW defeated Catawba in a men's basketball exhibition game on Saturday 97-68. After the game we went courtside to get the new coach's take on the exhibition victory along with a look ahead to the season opener this coming Friday against Old Dominion.

Local runner wins Savannah marathon

videoThe Rock-N-Roll marathon happened in Savannah, GA this weekend and the female winner was one of our own. Tara Martine of Wilmington finished the more than 26 mile race in 2 hours and 59 minutes.

Brackets set for high school football state playoffs

The pairings are now locked in for the 2014 high school football state playoffs. Several area schools have been awarded a home game for first round play. Some teams will have to open on the road. A few of our local football squads missed out on extending their season.
