St. Patrick's Parade Brings Irish Atmosphere Downtown

It was a great day for the Irish, and a great day for a parade. In a city not known for its Irish population, Wilmington's getting the hang of this St Patrick's Day thing.

“We're really excited,” says chairman Steve McEnaney. “Its about 40% larger than we've ever had before. We have some groups we didn't expect, we've got dune-buggies, we've got a clown who showed up. We didn't expect him either.”

Marching bands, motorcycles, and mayors entertained the very festive crowd. Mother nature smiled down too as blue skies lit up the green shirts - and green dogs below.

“I think its just the magic of St Patrick's,” said Matthew Futch who died his dog Zero green. “We woke up this morning and he was this way. Ya, we dyed him this morning. Kind of a last minute thing. He's a little patchy, but, it turned out pretty good.”

This is the eleventh year for the parade in the port city, which was started by the Ancient Order of Hibernians - the same group that throws New York City's parade. It's been getting bigger each year, gaining more and more community support.

“A lot of community spirit here going on, perfect day down here at the riverfront,” said Sean Russell. “Having a good time for St Patty's Day.”

One thing the Irish are always good at is having a good time and having a few laughs.
“Even if it rained, we’d march. Because if the Irish can’t march in the rain who can.” Says Steve McEnaney.

For Pat Looney, he feel lucky to be Irish. “If you’re lucky enough to be Irish, you’re lucky enough.”

And luckily enough - the real St Patrick's Day is still ahead.
