NEW HANOVER COUNTY -- The Castle Hayne man stabbed multiple times more than a month ago is home from the hospital and has quite a story to tell. The victim's 14-year-old daughter made the 911 call that may have saved her dad's life. Ronald Darden was stabbed more than two dozen times. He's been in the hospital recovering from his injuries for the past month. He recently got out, but says he will never be the same physically or emotionally. Darden said, "Next thing I knew, when I turned around I felt the knife coming down stabbing me." Darden says he doesn't know what made Ackerman attack him. "He just kept saying, you're going to pay, you're going to pay and I was like, for what man?" Darden said. Darden's 14-year-old daughter was awoken by the commotion. She saw her dad being stabbed, and made the quick decision to call 911. Darden said, "I think she's very brave, considering the fact that she was scared and shook up and everything. I think she did a great job, I told her that." He now has to eat through a tube and says he lives in fear knowing the man who he says stabbed him, Mark Ackerman, is still at large. Stabbing victim Ronald Darden said, "It bothers me. I can't go outside with, you know what I mean? When I drive in the car I ride around with the doors locked now." Darden said, "There's no reason for this man to still be on the loose." Investigators have been looking for Ackerman since the morning Darden got stabbed. Detectives say he may have headed towards New Orleans, Florida or Texas. Investigators say there's also a chance Ackerman could be headed back this way. If you see him, call the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office at 798-4260, or you can just call 911.
