State cracking down on animal euthanization

READ MORE:
COLUMBUS COUNTY -- The state is cracking down on the way animal shelters euthanize stray animals in their care. The state Board of Agriculture voted this week to approve new regulations specifying the right way to euthanize animals in the shelter. One shelter in Columbus County that deals with this issue every week. The new regulation states, animal shelters using lethal injections or carbon monoxide to put animals down will have to do it in the most humane way possible. The rule will also set standards on equipment and enforce extensive training for facility employees. This comes after a two year process between an animal welfare committee and the board of agriculture to set these guidelines. Right now the Columbus County shelter uses carbon monoxide in a home-made gas chamber to euthanize animals. Animal Control Director Rossie Hayes says due to the publics care of unwanted animals, euthanization is a necessary evil. "The whole bottom line is that it's the public out there, if they would control their animals so they wouldn't multiply there wouldn't be no need for it," Hayes said. "Anyway way you look at it what the state requires us to do we will abide by it." This regulation is expected to take effect by April 1. To comply with the new rules the shelter may have replace its home-made chamber with a commercially manufactured one. Not all animal lovers believe carbon monoxide is the way to go.

Cruelty to Animals

How is it that the state can pass laws to prevent cruelty to animals, but yet they pass laws that tell animal shelters how to be cruel to animals. The state's animal shelters should be ASHAMED of their behavior, and the example that they give to the public on how to treat animals. ASHAMED!!!

I agree

I agree. Carbon Monoxide would not be my first choice to euthanize an animal, but I must admit, it's better than a lot of other ways...though I think lethal injections is the road to go down, if the animal can just drift off to sleep and...just not wake up.

animal wuthanization

this is wrong and people need to stop this immediatley

really? really>

really? really> "wuthinazation"???? its an E not a W

Horrid Way of Treatment

This is horrible I saw a video on the gas chambers it was so sad. The dogs were jumping around in the small gas chamber begging to give kisses and the next thing you see is a bunch of dogs laying lifeless on the ground! !INHUMANE AND HORRID HOW INHUMANE CAN THIS GET!

truth!!!

I agree 100% with the women who compared them to children up for adoption! Just the other day i was reading about how at only one shelter they put to sleep Over 100,000 dogs in a year, and after reading this story about how they gased them it just reminds me of the concentration camps, and what they acctually did to people and how deppressing it was, but what happened then is happening now but to dogs. They can't speak to us so animal lovers have been trying to speak out to everyone else and maybe it's time you just listened!!!!

Changes at Columbus County Animal Control

I recently found a beautiful, sweet-natured brindle and white boxer-pit bull mix. Someone had simply dumped her on Highway 211. I had seen her standing on the shoulder of the road in a driving rain at 9 AM, and when I was returning from Bladenboro at 3 PM, she was still standing there, obviously waiting for whomever dumped her to return. It was a very cold rainy day and once in my truck, I used an old sweatshirt to dry her off while the heat blew directly on her. She moaned softly and nuzzled against my hand as I rubbed her, but at the sound of every car approaching, her ears would perk up and she would rise to see if the person who let her down so badly was returning. Since I already have a dog and cats, I called Columbus County Animal Control, who drove out to the location to meet me. I had heard the horror stories about their shelter, and told Jonathan that if no one claimed the dog and her time was up, please call me and I would take her in or find her a home. He assured me that they now have a volunteer who comes in serveral times a week simply to find homes for abandoned pets. A week later, Jonathan took the time to call me and tell me that the dog who had been adopted by a woman who agreed with my assessment, that the dog was one of the sweetest, nicest dogs ever born. I sincerely believe that the Columbus County Animal Shelter is trying to make things better, and the negative press they received in the past has been a good incentive to place greater importance on the needs of the animals. I know that I was impressed with Jonathan's professionalism and obvious concern for that dog.

Thank you for sharing...

Most people do not leave home saying they want to do away with these animals today. I believe and what Common has proved, that these people geniunely want what is best for these animals. I have 4 pound puppies as well as four pound kitties. I care for them and I have them all fixed. All of you animal lovers screaming (all caps, which is very rude!) about how cruel this is, what have you done to help the situation? Do you volunteer at the shelter? Have you dontated money to provide forster homes for these animals? If you're not part of the solution, your part of the problem. Get down from your soap boxes and get to work. Thank you Common for your post. Two of my dogs are from Columbus County and I found those that I spoke with there very nice and appreciative of our adoptions.

THEY NEED TO BE SHUT DOWN!!!!

THERE IS NO WAY THAT THIS SHOULD BE LEGAL. IT IS NOT THE ANIMALS FAULT THAT THEY ARE BORN. IT IS JUST LIKE HUMANS HAVING BABIES AND ADOPTING THEM OUT.WE'RE NOT PUTTING THE BABIES IN ROOMS OF CARBON MONOXIDE AND KILLING THEM BECAUSE THEY DONT HAVE ANYWHERE TO GO. NO WE FIND A HOME. THAT IS THE MOST CRUEL THING I HAVE EVER HEARD. I HAVE WORKED AT A VET FOR 4 YEARS AND WE HAVE NEVER DONE ANYTHING LIKE THAT. I AM SO THANKFUL THAT I DO NOT LIVE IN COLUMBUS COUNTY. DOGS ARE NEXT GENERATION, THEY ARE SAVING LIVES FOR PEOPLE THAT DO NOT HAVE A FAMILY NOR PEOPLE TO RELY ON TO HELP THEM, BUT I CAN TELL YOU WHAT THEY DO HAVE..."THE BEST DAMN FRIEND THAT WONT TURN THEIR BACK ON THEM AND THAT FRIEND, IS THEIR DOG THAT WAS MOST LIKELY A STRAY, THAT GOT TRAINED TO BE A SERVICE DOG. COME ON AND OPEN YOUR EYES PEOPLE DOGS ARE LIKE HUMANS AND SOMETIMES SMARTER. DONT JUST THROW AWAY THEIR LIVES LIKE THAT ITS NOT THEIR FAULT JUST LIKE IT WASENT YOUR FAULT YOU WERE BORN BUT YOU HAD HELPING HANDS. AND THAT IS WHAT THEY NEED.THEY NEED A CHANCE. YOU PEOPLE THAT WORK AT THE COLUMBUS COUNTY NEED TO BE RE-INTERVIEWED FOR YOUR JOBS BECAUSE KILLING THESE DOGS LIKE THIS IS CRAZY. THANK GOD FOR DOGGY HEAVEN!!!!!!LEAST THEY HAVE A HOME UP THERE!

I agree with Jessica and yet....

How right you are Jessica. These loving animals didn't ask for this and it is an abomination that things like this go on in this manner. It's also an abomination that we as a people allow this to happen by not having animals spayed and neutered. We must also take the responsibility for the problem. Those of us who do act in a responsible manner should open our mouths and educate the backyard breeders out there and the people that just let cats breed without any rhyme or reason. It's long past time!

I couldnt agree more. I

I couldnt agree more. I have NEVER even heard of such a horrible thing. I just moved here this past summer and can not believe this is aloud.

COLUMBUS COUNTY ANIMAL

COLUMBUS COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL DOSE NOT CARE ABOUT THE ANIMALS.THEY WOULD RATHER SHOOT THEM THAN PICK THEM UP.NO GAS BOXES!!!!!! I'M FROM COLUMBUS COUNTY AND I HAVE SEEN HOW THEY TREAT THE ANIMALS.IF I WAS GOING TO GET RID OF MY DOG I WOULD RATHER TAKE IT TO THE VET TO BE PUT TO SLEEP THAN TAKE IT TO COLUMBUS COUNTY ANIMAL CONTROL!!!!!

Horrid Way of Treatment
