The Wilmington assisted living facility in danger of having its license revoked is now under another investigation. GlenCare of Wilmington appealed the state's decision to suspend admissions and possibly revoke its license claiming it had made improvements to fix the violations revealed by the state investigation, but DSS says GlenCare is under investigation again, and it's looking into claims that mismedication put a resident in the hospital.
In early February the state issued GlenCare several violations and deficiencies. One of the problems the state found was mismanagement of drugs. On February 24 GlenCare appealed the state's decision saying it had taken steps to comply with all state requirements. But on February 19 DSS started investigating a new issue related to mismedication at the facility.
DSS received complaints that a resident was mismedicated and wound up in the hospital. DSS expects to complete the investigation by the end of the week. The state has not yet responded to GlenCare's appeal.
We spoke with the family of the resident who was hospitalized. They confirmed the incident but declined to appear on camera.
It's worth noting that since our investigation began almost three months ago we've spoken with several concerned family members who declined to talk on camera. The families said they were worried their would be repercussions if the staff at GlenCare knew they had come forward. To this point we have only had one family come forward in support of GlenCare.
GlenCare owner Glen Kornegay has not returned our call today for comment.

assisted living/nursing homes
I've been dealing with this situation over four years now. You wouldn't believe what goes on. What we really need foe starters are people who care about the residents. Very few do. Most are there to get that paycheck and that's it. If you people who have relatives in these places cared enough, they would visit on a regular basis and see for themselves what goes on. Most of the residents very seldom have visitors. Seems as the families put them there and just forget them. That is so sad. Our elderly deserve more than that. The way I see it, they have lived long lives, some not such a good life maybe, and lots of them have worked hard their entire lives. I think when they get up in age they deserve to be treated with all the kindness and compassion you can give them. I could say lots more. but I won't. People just don't know.
bottom line
The bottom line is this place is taking money to care for people. And it isn't doing that. Alot of these places are doing that. No one every checks. I glad somebody stood up and said enough was enough on it. and maybe they will look into more places. They charge a lot of money not to do anything, bathing, meds, meals,
Sources of prescription drugs
Yep, these are the places that are the primary generators of the illegal trade of the black-market prescription drug trade in southeastern NC. Poorly managed care facilities and "In home care" businesses that thrive over in the run down strip mall spot, contribute to the abuse of the vulnerable take advantage of the situations.
The state needs to look into more than rest homes and see what all these "care" businesses are up too. Unregulated, poorly run and loosely investigated has led to this situation. The state needs to be more responsible for this story.
You are correct!
However, it is pretty much the norm these days with just about any business. They all want your money up front, they want commitment and they want it all on time. When it comes to holding up their end of the deal, well...you just get what you get and that's it, without recourse. Sorry Charlie....
Responsibility, accountability and just flat out providing what you say you provide is indeed a rare thing to encounter these days...even when the human element is involved.
dont get it
this facility is to small to have so many issues. the owners need to give it up and let someone whom cares take it over and run it like it should be, until the owners let go all the bad staff members its not going to get any better.
Glenn Care
Yes, My father in law was in Glenn Care for a short time. He said they would not give him his medicine unless he ask for it. When he left to come stay with us for a few days they would give him his medicine in sheets thier would be enough for weeks. He would not have to be signed out or back in. The place was never clean when we were in there. Glen Care always smelled really bad. The staff was not friendly at all. They should be shut down and the owners should never be allowed to own an assistd care facility at all.
They own quite a few of the
They own quite a few of the facilities throughout the state.
People, if you want your family members to get the best care, then keep them home. If you cannot do that, then visit, every day. Residents with family members who visit frequently generally get the best care.
Also, think ahead to your own future. Plan for it. Save money so you can be private pay and go to a facility that is all private pay. Most of the time, not all the time, that is where you will get the best care. And part of that is because most of those patients aren't really "sick". They just need assistance.
Another part of the problem is the fact these resident's should not be at this level of care. They are too sick to be in a place that doesn't have an actual licensed medical professional. Just someone who took a test a 12 year old can pass. And to get Rest Home Administrator's license is sooooo easy. The training required to work in these facilities would be a good idea for an investigative news report.
Mismedication
I really think that the MEDIA and all these people that are talking about things that they think are going on in Glen Care would just hush if it wassuch a big problem why wait until you are FIRED until you bring up issues that mean you dont care you are just seeking pay back, this mismedication issue is something that should have never gotten out but someone that wants to see Glen Care get into trouble apparently ran their mouth and it was not their family member, let the families deal with these problems if they chose to, and I think Glen Care is a very lovely place you cant judge a book from just looking at the outside you must look in and read it....thanks
typical ignorant HS dropout
oh just hush blah blah blah. Your probably the same type that wouldnt call the police when some moron was selling crack next door for fear of being a rat or a snitch right?? Idiots like you are the reason this country sucks because nobody has a backbone to do whats right. Its easy to take the easy way and keep your mouth shut. Sadly what these staffers have mentioned happens all too often. Decietful and sometimes criminal behavior comes out of owners sometimes who care only about the money and how much they can make. I know of a facility in Boone NC in fact (Was called Highland Hall) whose owners all drove around in 40K dollar vehicles while the residents didnt have a thing to eat. (I know cause I know somebody who worked there and finally called APS on them after they bought food outta there own pockets to feed the residents one night because they were sick of the abuse and neglect). Somehow Im guessing Kornegay and his wife are about on the same level its all about their wallet and not the residents needs which sickens me. Borderline criminals like that need to be shutdown and banned from the care of the eldery and less fortunate (because yes AL facilities do in fact care for other medicaid type residents as well to include MR/DD and others who arent your typical AARP card carriers and those people deserve dignity too).
@Mister: If there are
@Mister:
If there are violations, they should be held accountable - end of story.
This isn't a soap opera, they are running a business and should do so within the guidelines set forth by the powers that be.
I did
I just want to reiterate the fact that I tried to talk to Katherine while employeed at Glencare. I was ignored. I wrote several letters to DSS, politicians and news outlets while I was working there. I told adminsitration that I was doing so. I did not hide it and when I was threatened with termination, and hung up on when outlining my concerns I said you do what you have to and they did just that. They then proceeded to file a false restraining order on me which was thrown out of court. They broke labor laws in terminating me the way they did and I was told that I have a law suit. I've chosen not to persue it because it is not about the money. It is about the people. Please know your facts before assuming that I was disgruntled. I loved my job and those residents and anyone who has worked with me is well aware of that but I could not in good conscience let the neglect go further. That is how neglect escalates into abuse and that happens often in this society. I would love to have kept my job and seen the necessary changes without all of this and the subsequent unemployeement and loss of friendships but believe me when I say they left me with no other alternative and that is so sad.
@ i did
i agree with you 110% corey, when i was a employee there i told katherine sessoms i suspected abuse going on in the alzheimers unit, im just sorry i could not prove it, nor did katherine do anything about it, i was threaten also that if i talked to any employees at glencare they would take papers out on me. i was a very decent respectable employee at glencare and im still holding my head very high, i feel sorry for all the residents and very few staff members caught up in all this mess glencare has caused. i hope one day the residents will get good caring staff to make there lives a little easier and safer.i cared about each and every resident and still do.
The state & the owners/managers responsibilty
It's not the family's responsiblity to find these things out. It should be the state's responsibilty to find out that these places are making mistakes that could put people lives in danger. And it is the owners or whoever is in charge to hire qualified employees and train them properly and make sure they follow-up to make sure things are being done correctly. When a mistake is found they shouldn't just make it look good on paper they should call the doctors and admit they made a mistake and let the doctor tell them what needs to be done to correct it for the health of the resident. They would have good employees if they paid decent wages and only hired people who cared about people not just people who need a job. Also, they should do a drug test on any employee before they hire them.
Get a clue
It IS very much the FAMILY'S responsibility to check out a place before they put their family member there. Call DSS, check the state websites. For Pete's sake, google the name! The "State" can only do so much. They make an annual visit unless there are complaints. Look to your local DSS and see why all this stuff has been happening and they haven't been noticing it on their monthly visits.
When owners/administrators consort with a regulatory agency staff member, then there is bound to be some problems. The people working in that facility knew what was going on.
You need to go online and read the rules that govern these places and see what they are allowed to hire to work there. I can work in the kitchen one day and be an administrator the next.
The Regulations can be decieving.
I agree to some extent but bare in mind that Glencare was rated three stars even with all the deficincies that state later found AND it took several complaints, whistle blowers and news coverage to get state to even do a thorough inspection. Furthermore, it was only after they found all of those deficincies and we're threatened with the revokation of their license that the Kornegays kind of in a round about way claimed that they were attempting to do something about the situation again without apologizing or accepting responsibility and here we are less than a month later and another resident's life was put in danger. Who do they have to blame now? They are running the facility and the same things are happening and yet it is buisness as usual as they continue to provide substandard care and rake in the money from their 7 facilitys. Where is the accountibility? and where is the outrage?
