The City of Southport is seeking more than $1 million from Dosher Memorial Hospital for electricity used but not paid for since fiscal year 2004, due to an error in billing discovered from internal audits of the city’s utility accounts.
Dennis Coffey, chief financial officer for Dosher, confirmed that the hospital has received notice from the city that it owes some amount greater than $1 million due to the error. He said hospital officials planned to meet with the city this week to discuss the matter.
“We have been billed for back electricity based on an error made by the city,” Coffey said. “We’ve always received and paid our bill as presented to us in a timely fashion, so it’s never been an issue.
“We are in fact going to be meeting with some representatives from the city to discuss this issue next week,” he said. “I would prefer not to say anything further until we have had that meeting.”
