State sales tax increase goes into effect

READ MORE: State sales tax increase goes into effect
You're now going to find yourself spending a little more when you go shopping. The state sales tax increased by one percent today and is now 7.75 percent in most counties. Governor Perdue hopes to raise more than $ 800 million to help close North Carolina’s budget gap. Many consumers said they don't mind. "It's getting football season now and I’m ready to get one of these beautiful color TV’s and the one percent definitely won't make any difference,” said Larry Stukes. Mike Riley from Soundtronics says the tax hike will tack on an additional 10 to 15 dollars on an average TV there. "The ones that were thinking about making a purchase, especially a higher dollar purchase like the TV's and the surround sound systems, went ahead and decided to go ahead and make the purchase to save the money on the taxes,” he said. Some consumers say if the state needs to tax more, sales tax is the way to do it. "It’s a lot better alternative than perhaps an increase in the income tax and road tolls. From my standpoint, I don't think the extra one percent is going to make any difference, I know it could affect other people,” said Dan Bruno. At Soundtronics, bookkeepers are working through the kinks and expecting the increase to cause the bigger problem for their home installers. While Democrats say this is needed to tackle the state's budget gap, some Republicans say it will only further delay economic recovery. The tax increase does not apply to food.

Thanks Governor

Lets all thank Bev for trying to budget the state the only way she knows how to, by taking more of our money when lots of us are now making less. (Applause) (Standing Ovation)

Thanks for the memories

Exactly why I did not vote for you in the first place. I could see it coming. You were chomping at the bit(literally) to raise this tax. You were chomping at the bit to raise gas tax(and you did). You made what was the old maximum gas tax the new minimum tax with no limit what it can go to. WOW. LOL. I hope folke remember come election time what you are doing. So what is next Bev?

NC is broke!?

"Governor Perdue hopes to raise more than $ 800 million to help close North Carolina’s budget gap." Why doesn't the govt. "raise money" like the rest of us?? We go on a BUDGET to make sure we can afford our commitments. I say "raise money" by cutting back on utilities in govt. offices. =) Turn off the a/c. Oh and BEV, why don't you fly commerical INSTEAD OF PRIVATE?? I hear Southwest has great deals on flights. And while your at it....dump all those pork barrel projects!!

Some really bad math on taxes here....

Not sure what to say about this except that somebody needs a serious math lesson. The increase of the sales tax from 6.75% to 7.75% is a ONE CENT increase. This equates to a 14.9 PERCENT increase to the sales tax rate. That's correct...14.9% tax increase, not 1%. Now...did anyone out there get even a 5% increase on their salary? How about a 3% decrease in their insurance premiums? Utility bills went down, right? How about gas prices? Are your bills at the grocery store decreasing too? Maybe we are all on the same camp now. A 14.9% tax increase, a 30% homeowners insurance increase? People are taking pay cuts and even losing jobs and this gets dropped on our laps? Ohh...and it temprorary too, only good until 2011. Righto...... Misreporting due to errors? Embarrasing maybe? Not nearly as embarrasing as having Bev Perdue lay this burden on the citizens of North Carolina and it's only the tip of the iceberg. Wait until you go out for dinner and cocktails or stop at the corner market to buy your carload of kids some sodas. What is it going to take for the citizens of this great state to stand up and stop having greedy politicians ramrod this stuff down throats completely unchecked? It's OUR money, not the governments!!!

I will be ordering more on

I will be ordering more on the internet. I would rather pay shipping charges than sales tax.
