WILMINGTON (AP) -- A toll bridge over the Cape Fear River would cost one $1.75 a vehicle if it opened in eight years, according to a preliminary study.
The government needs to find a way to cover the rest of the cost of the $1 billion bridge. The study estimates that part would cost $39 million a year over about 40 years.
The North Carolina Turnpike Authority has proposed the Cape Fear Skyway as a toll-supported southern crossing of the river to connect New Hanover and Brunswick counties. The bridge is part of a proposed new nine-mile highway. It would rise 225 feet above the Cape Fear.
The Cape Fear Skyway is one of seven potential toll roads in the state. North Carolina has no toll roads now.
