Surfing for a cause

Andrew Silvagni is a survivor. He was diagnosed with Lyme Disease three years ago but he didn't let that stop him from getting into the water. He says "I am a little weaker but, you know, it's just the mechanics with surfing that you know, truly makes you good or not, you just have to know how to ride the wave, I can still surf."

An avid surfer, Andrew and his brother, along with their parents, came up with a way to celebrate Andrew's love of the ocean and make the public more aware of Lyme Disease. They teamed up with Bavaria Holland beer to create the Pro A/M Silvagni Surf Contest.

Andrew says, "My father came up with this epiphany, to do this cause we know so many locals around here, and all of the people in the surf industry and, you know, with my brother, he was able to network with a plethora of sponsors."

This is the second year for the competition, but already it has gained national attention.

His brother Tony is amazed at the support, "We have somewhere around 230 competitors from all over, some from Miami, South Carolina, even Puerto Rico, it's crazy, there are people from everywhere."

Some kids that I spoke to on the beach said they look forward to participating in the surf contest every year because its a fun way for them to raise money and awareness for people with Lyme Disease.

Thirteen-year-old Alyssa Horner and her brother, Thomas said, "It's really good to raise money for other people who have diseases like cancer, Leukemia and Lymes Disease and all those other diseases... it's nice to get people aware of the diseases that are out there, and it's helpful to help other people."

Lyme disease and all, Andrew's spirits are still high and he is thankful for peoples support. "It's exciting, you know, to have the whole come together and support this cause and enjoy the beach, enjoy the waves that mother nature brings us, its a beautiful site."
